President Bush gestures to NAACP Chairman Julian Bond, left, as a heckler yells from the audience as Bush made remarks, Thursday, July 20, 2006, at the NAACP Annual Convention in Washington. 12. They may have been "shussshhhing"
It is traditional for the audience to listen quietly, even if they disagree.

That's why I found this surprising--I might be wrong, but I think this is a first. Of course, if he'd bothered to show up for the last five invites, he might have gotten a better reception.

23. There is THAT way of looking at it, sure...
But Bush doesn't allow for a civil way to confront him with disagreement.

The only way to disagree with him is to engage in heckling.

Or, you can stand ten miles away inside a concrete underground bunker in the "free speech zone."

36. Amen. Fuck politeness. Fuck civility (at least when it comes to Bu$hCo).
All it gets you is a "free speech zone" and a swiftboating in the media. Liberals need to forget what they learned about treating others with respect in the case of Bu$hCo. You treat them with respect and they walk all over you. Civil, rational debate and respect for other opinions were thrown out a long time ago by the GOP. We need to MAKE them listen now.

31. But your guest at your house would be engaging
you in a conversation, which goes at least two ways, depending on the number of people involved. Bush was there to lecture for political purposes, and doesn't give a flying fig about the people he was addressing. A couple of attendees chose to communicate with him in the only way possible, since he's not exactly inviting THEM to "his" house.

Honestly, have you never had a cross word with someone that you invited into your home? No close friends that you call them on their bullshit, ever?

I have. Many times. Will most likely do it again too. And, I can still set a formal table. Go Figure!

89. heckling or being caged in a chain link fence? Tough choice
When by voicing dissaproval for an elected official is possible in only two ways-- heckling or being caged up in a chain link fence called a "free speech zone", I know what choice I'm making.

Also, I believe your analogy is invalid. I think it should have gone more like this, "If I invited people over to my house as guests, I'd hope they'd treat each other civilly, even if they disagreed with each other".

102. I've thought about this...
Exactly how polite could/would I be to Bush if I should happen to meet him?
I really don't know. I am not sure I could be polite, but I would sure try, because I would love to get him in an interview situation and start asking him questions and just see how he would answer. I'm afraid my questions might go beyond the polite.

And watching the mess with the German chancellor yesterday - what would I do if Bush had come up behind me? And, as a regular citizen, if I had not known who it was and just elbowed him in the stomach, would that be assault or self-defense? Would I land in jail if I didn't know? Just rambling and wondering....

10. Those don't look like audience members trying to stop them.
They look like security - the one on the left is definitely wired, the one on the right looks like he could be, but it might just be the glasses behind his ear.

But since they're both in suits, and both quite large, it makes me think that there were security planted in the audience.

And the news calls it "members of the audience".

My ass they are.

22. Throwing black men out of an NAACP meeing while a white man speaks?
Let me see if I got this right.

We have an association of black persons at which black persons were evicted for speaking truth to power to a white person.

One has to wonder about such an orginization.

101. I'm sorry, but they were being rude.
Bush was an invited speaker. You don't invite people to address your organization and then tolerate heckling. Skin color is utterly irrelevant.

The guys paying attention to them look like security to me. Everyone else is sorta hanging in their seats, listening. One guy in the front appears to be smiling a bit.

What a jerk ~ trying to be so cool and in control.

Maybe it was best that he kept Julian Bond out of it, shows how much command he does not have of his audience.

What's civilized about letting American citizens die in the streets of an American city?

What's civilized about disenfranchising hundreds of thousands of African-Americans so you can steal the presidency not once but twice?

I see ONE asshole who isn't 'civilized', and that was the one addressing the crowd.

114. Don't worry about it ~ the old timers were working behind
the scenes and let the young ones do the shouting.

I am delighted when young adults get it and have the guts to speak TRUTH to POWER in their own way.

Trust me, I am African American and have attended many NAACP meetings. Those older members are sharp as a tack and worked the Civil Rights Movement in the 60's. Don't play them cheap.

What a monumental a**hole. His gall and nerve have no bounds. No accountability, just "telling then how it is" and putting the blame elsewhere while "want(ing) to help people." Not these, people, necessarily, but that's another speech. MF.
