...this latest flare-up started over the kidnapping of two soldiers. The way to punish that is to kill hundreds of civilians???

A proportionate response would have been for the Israelis to begin kidnapping Hezbollah members. But that takes intelligence legwork and the Israelis couldn't be bothered, I guess. On top of that, unfortunately, just like the United States, the Israelis have no sense of proportion. They genuinely believe that one of "their own" is worth a hundred or even a thousand of anyone else. Just like us here in America. Maybe it's no wonder we are so biased towards Israel--we share their same incessant self-regard. It's no wonder ours are likely the two most hated nations in the world if we both hold the values of even the merest handful of our own lives above the lives of practically entire populations of other nations.

Anyway, kidnapping Hezbollah members might have made them stop kidnapping Israeli soldiers, or it might not. Maybe it would have been a tit for tat for several months. But it probably wouldn't have led to this wholesale and almost wholly one-sided slaughter we have now.
