How are you fighting for what we believe in?
I have 2 boys 3&5 yrs old, I work full time and have bills up the wazu. I am volunteering to help the campaign of Dave Mejias (D) running against Peter King for the 3rd Congressional District of N.Y.. I am waiting for them to contact me but I am going to help put out signs and flyer's. I have a small business and I'm willing to use my truck and spare time to help get rid of Peter King. I do not live in his district but I feel very fortunate to live close enough to be able to work against a representative of the Authoritarian SOB's that hate America and what it has stood for.
What are you doing to win this fight?

1. I am helping John Felders
fight against incumbent Kevin Wilson for 131st District, here in SW Missouri. Its an uphill battle, and I never fully realized, how much work goes into a campaign. Felders, I know, is in all honesty, probably going to lose badly, but at least there is opposition....

2. primarily, managing a local campaign
before I took on that job, I collected signatures and clean elections contributions for something like 12 candidates. the amount of $5 contribs for the CCEC is too high for me to remember, but nothing super-extraordinary.

by the way, I did the collecting in my precinct, which I tried to organize, and I'm on the ballot to become precinct committeeman, but I may move before the election--and seriously, if I do, there'll hardly be a difference in the way this precinct votes, the people here (even the heavy-voting dems) have been so obstinate in getting involved or helping organize, and it's a pretty big precinct for one person to take on.

also, the campaign I'm managing is clear across town, the district encompasses two of the higher-income cities of this state, and there's a 2-to-1 voter registration advantage for Republicans.

but that's not stopping me.

4. Thanks for replying, I feel these Authoritarians have to be stopped.
Peter King is such an A-Hole he should be easy to defeat, he must be made to answer for every vote he made. The final straw with me was when I heard him on Mark Levin (WABC) and this idiot did not even know his own web address. If Dave Majias is serious about winning King is an easy target using his own words.

5. I'm volunteering as a District Coordinator
Trying to round up a team of Section Coordinators, Precinct Leaders and respective team members. Our goal is to have a ratio of about 1 to 100 volunteers to voters for our District. We've been walking door to door to talk with Democrats and Non-Partisan voters (we'll hit the Repubs later, to survey them) to discuss issues, talk about how important this election is and find volunteers to join our team.

7. Couple of things come to mind
Edited on Thu Jul-20-06 02:30 PM by Emit
First, for voter registration drives (check with your local Dem party headquarters) they often need people to transport folding tables and chairs, signs, literature, etc. to these events and to help set up. Your truck would be perfect for that. Another thing comes to mind -- Get Out The Vote efforts on election days (Primary and General) sometimes involves giving rides to people who can't get to their polls to vote.

Otherwise, it really depends on how much time you have to offer and at what time of the day you are available to volunteer. The teams we're building right now include leaders (people to build and organize whole teams--takes more time, overall); phone callers (for various canvassing purposes, phone trees, calling to ask others to volunteer, etc.); canvassers (doing surveys, passing out literature for candidates, talking to potential volunteers, etc.); data entry (includes keeping track in our data base of how people respond to surveys, stats, etc.); People to host parties or bring food/drinks to various events; and various positions on election day like poll watcher, driver, callers reminding folks to vote -- can be limited just to election day or, in our state, early vote period.

These are just some ideas. Call your nearest Dem party and see what they need -- they'll try to match your available time and efforts to their needs.

Every state may be different.

You should check out the precinct forum here at DU for other ideas and discussion. They've been very helpful over there. I'll find the link in a minute.

9. We still have our memorial to the soldiers
in the front yard. There are 2554 orange flags to represent the soldiers who have given their lives, a huge peace sign and two American flags. This is a tribute to all U. S. soldiers who are serving our country. As we are unlucky enough to live in Ohio we will fight like hell to remove Dewine this fall and will do our level best to keep Blackwell from becoming Governor. Peace, Kim

10. Member of the College Democrats here in Mississippi
Had my troubles repaid in the form of arson of our parade float. Fucking terrorists. It is this kind of intolerance we're up against. The only thing the whackjobs out here didn't do was burn a fucking cross on the front lawn.

On the other hand, we've sponsored several anti-war protests here in the center of town, and we have a city alderman who is also an officer of this chapter.

I participated in the Spring conference of college Dems of Mississippi. We made some good progress. Our platform now includes essentially an equal rights amendment for gays in Mississippi, and we had a struggle over the immigration issue in the US, but I believe we came out good.

11. I'm sorry to hear about the arson
I know that hit you hard. We had Kerry signs burned on two separate occasions. Can't believe that we live in America. Peace, Kim

12. Doing my part
Well look, I'm a college student with a limited budget. So I can't attend every rally and every protest that comes around. But I'm donating to the party. I plan to vote a straight Democratic ticket in the coming election (there ain't no Republican running that looks good to me).

A Democrat-controlled House and/or Senate and a Democratic White House is the only way that our civil rights will survive.

13. We both volunteer one day a week on Cantwell campaign. Also try to educate
people we meet on the issues. So many people out there are not paying attention. By the time they do, I can't help but wonder what will be left of our consistitution and our democracy.
