Bush Bombs At NAACP

Bush Bombs At NAACP

Snip...

Here’s why. Rather than use the speech to announce bold policies that would address the concerns at the top of the civil rights organization’s agenda or to rally the nation behind at least some of that agenda, Bush offered a mélange of warmed-over conservative nostrums and half-baked facts.

He also said nothing about the number one issue on the national agenda, the war in Iraq, even though that war has taken a disproportionate toll on African Americans , who comprise about a quarter of the nation’s enlisted soldiers despite making up only 12 percent of the general populace.

Snip...

The audience was not impressed with Bush’s reference to his support of federal aid to faith-based institutions , even though the NAACP’s membership includes a number of clergy members who have been beneficiaries of government faith-based grants. “I believe in neighborhood helpers and healers,” Bush said, defending what he said was $5 billion in government funds to faith-based groups his administration has given. “We should not discriminate based on religion.”

The president also did not get much applause when he talked about the $110 billion in aid to New Orleans and Gulf Coast communities affected by Hurricane Katrina. Almost every aspect of the government’s program has been bungled or infused with corruption—this week’s reports of Department of Homeland Security employees ripping off emergency aid funds being only the latest example.

2. For a second, I thought you said, "Bush bombed the NAACP."
That would've been bad.

9. Thanks for the link
Makes me wonder why Bush brought the Secretary of Stinkeye with him. "See? I know some black people -- and she's not even from Brazil!" Apparently he didn't mention foreign policy at all, which is kind of curious since black people make up about a quarter of the armed forces (and they about an eighth of the population). You'd think he'd want to say something to an audience with such strong military bona fides.

6. Another thing -
He said ZERO about foreign affairs - Iraq and all the other stuff going on. An attendee of the speech said Bush needs to realize blacks aren't just all about civil rights, they care about everything else too and wanted to hear it. The man was insulted.

Heard this in a report on NPR.

10. Why Do You Think He Brought Condi?
Come on DUers. You know the answer to that one. Ever heard the term "token black?" Colin Powell is gone, so Condi is the next closest "white" black person he could dredge up.

Next year he'll probably bring blackwell with him. He needs a few blacks around for appearance sake.

They showed the only clip with decent applause to make it come off that they loved his performance. :puke:

13. For those who've not yet seen it, here's a link to a first hand account
It's in GDP and is posted by DUer Anita Garcia. She and her husband do a wonderful job of telling the tale, making you feel as if your were right there watching shrub bomb.

14. Blacks do not fall for that warmed-over crap.
If you thought Bush's numbers were bad in general.....I think around 35% approval rating...

Take a look at the black community. I think it's something unbelievable....like 2%.

...nobody here would think he did okay. Do you really think anyone here--myself included--would ever say he gave a GOOD speech? He could give the finest speech in the world and we'd still say it was awful....come on! LOL!

28. It's a spectrum of suckiness.
Sometimes his speeches are kind of lousy, sometimes his speeches are really lousy, and sometimes his speeches are incomprehensibly lousy to an unsurpassed degree.
