We're watching the total breakdown, the total failure, of Bush/Neocon philosophy.
The Taliban are retaking cities in Afghanistan.
Iraq is in full-on civil war, and even our puppet there has made a public statement of support for Hezbollah.
NK is launching missiles, Iran is developing nukes, and the only branch of our military that has any respect left around the world is our ability to launch an air war. Once that's done, the whole world knows we can't win the hearts and minds it takes to get our boots OFF the ground. Thank our inept "leadership" (if you're still bold enough to call it that) in Iraq for that.
"Spreading democracy" ends up in the election of governments, or at least politicians, who are as hostile to Israel as the one that came before them and the one that will come after them.
"Kill 'em all" and "democracy at the point of a gun" aren't working.
The peace accords signed by Jordan and Egypt HAVE worked.
Let me repeat that.
ONLY the peace accords signed by Jordan and Egypt HAVE worked.
It's not that I'm taking sides in this. AFAIC, both Israel and Lebanon are wrong on this. AFAIC both sides will lose this war, sooner or later. AFAIC both sides are getting exactly what they've been asking for.
But I'm apalled at the reaction of the rabid right, and the way America is moving to match their POV. To them, Bush still isn't radical enough, Israel isn't violent enough, not enough blood has been shed to satiate them. Israel is 100% right, America is 100% right, anyone who disagrees is...you guessed it...a "terrorist." The word "terrorist" has lost all meaning. Like the boy who cried wolf, the neocons and their supporters have finally reached the point where "terrorist" means "anyone who's not a neocon." The NY Times are "terrorists." The Supreme Court are "terrorists." Liberals are "terrorist sympathizers." Even the duly-elected officals of one of those "spread democracies" are "terrorists." On and on and on we go, until no one who can think about a subject for more than 30 seconds at a time believes what they hear about "terrorists" any more. (Is bin Laden a "terrorist", or is he "margarineralized"? I can't keep track, any more.)
You want peace in the middle east? We're going to have to *WORK* for it. The President of the United States is going to have to get the leaders of Lebanon and Israel, Syria and Israel, yeah, even Iran and Israel to sit down at a table and hammer out an agreement that allows Israel to survive, but both sides to leave with their dignity intact. And that can't start until we yank the choke chain on our attack dog and tell it to "sit."
I would be remiss in not mentioning that THIS President of the United States lacks the international respect to accomplish this.
He couldn't even get them to agree to a back rub.
We have the government we deserve.
I don't believe we live in a utopia. The right thing won't happen. Not with the bunch of incompetent, greedy, corrupt, power before all else morons we have running this country. It's not a question of *IF* they'll fuck it up, but how badly.
Both Israel and Lebanon deserve better than we've given them.
