My response to Trib Editorial "Hacking the vote"

My "letter to the editor"

Thanks much for your editorial about the Brennan
report, the latest in a string of exposes on the
unreliability of electronic voting machines.
("Hacking the Vote," July 11, 2006, Section 1,
page 14:http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/chi-0607110260jul11,0,7284618.story?coll=chi-newsopinion-hed)

........................

We seem to have lost sight of the goal.

Job one for election officials isn't to speed up
the tallying, or to deploy high-tech window
dressing, or to ease the workload of election
officials.

Job one for election officials is to make sure
elections are honest.

Delegated that job, voting machines just lean on
their shovels.

Give us "old fashioned" paper ballots.

2. Give us old fashioned paper ballots
YES, YES....I AGREE....of course you realize they will send you a paper ballot that will then get run through a machine of some type ..a la scan tron.....ESS equipment...and will be counted on that machine whether you turn it in at the polling place or mail it in, sending it directly to the central counting facility . So, at some point, preferably AT THE POLLING PLACE BEFORE THE BALLOTS ARE TURNED IN TO THE CENTRAL COUNTING FACILITY..the ballots should be HAND COUNTED BY THE WORKERS AT THE POLLING PLACE....not just the number of ballots used, returned, spoiled, etc.....but the ACTUAL VOTES. I believe that would furnish the first count, and then when they run them through the official by darn machines at the RoV office, we would have a double check.
Personally,I would prefer that we AVOID any of the dern contraptions and use paper ballots, marked by human hands and counted by human hands and NEVER EVER put through any electronic equipment. Elections don't need to be speedy...they need to be accurate, reliable accounts of the voters' intentions. PLEASE. BUT ALSO, BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR ANY EVIDENCE OF SCRUBBING VOTERS FROM THE LISTS, OR NOT HAVING SUFFICIENT MACHINES AVAILABLE...OR ANY OTHER OF THE VARIOUS AND NEFARIOUS TRICKS USED IN FLORIDA AND OHIO...to fix the elections in other ways.

3. We'll probably have 200 people vote in my precinct...
That would be too many to count by hand... wwe will need a computer to count all those votes. Yeah, that's the ticket!
