I tend to forget how relatively peaceful the 90's were. The famous blow job was not a national security issue, but people paid attention because there wasn't a lot of other news, and face it.. sex sells. The Republicans used it as a diversion to keep prying eyes away from the fact that the economy was booming, Clinton's approval ratings were high and peace and prosperity were the catch phrases of the times. They even refused to back BC on his anti-Al Queda/anti-terrorist plans, calling it "Wag the dog". How things have changed.
I thought the Supreme Court Decision in 2000 was the worst moment of my life.
Then I thought that 9/11/01 was the worst moment of my life.
Then I thought the midterms in 2002 were the worst moment of my life.
Then I thought the US attack on Iraq was the worst moment of my life.
Then I thought when the Abu Ghraib stories/photos came out.. that was the worst moment of my life.
Then I thought the day after election day Nov 2004 was the worst moment of my life.
Then I thought the aftermath of Katrina/Rita was the worst moment of my life.
Then I thought the events in Haditha and other places (rape, murder, coverup) were the worst moment of my life.
Now I think the fact that what seems to be WW3 is erupting in Lebanon.. is the worst moment of my life.
I see the dismembered children and I feel lower than I've ever felt.
How do all those older events compare to this? I am not sure, but with each event I feel more shame, more helpless. We should all be ashamed of Bush and this Government and their apathy when innocent women and children are pulverized by bombs supposedly intended for others. The world is watching, and our leadership doesn't care.
To listen to Michael Bolton discuss this conflict is like watching Ritchie Rich talk about what being poor is all about. It's puffery, idiocy and apathy wrapped into an ugly ball of blood and guts and oil. When will we ever learn that we must get out and vote? I read recently that the USA among all other nations is the most proud, patriotic, love of country crap. If that is so, why do we have such low voter turnout? I realize people are disenfranchised, but WTF! how can you be proud of a country and at the same time say I don't vote because it doesn't make a difference? I know I'm singing to the choir here in DU but my heart is bleeding. Yes, I'm a bleeding heart liberal, and yes, I can't feel good about things when others are suffering so needlessly.
