Concerned Women: Marriott must stop providing pay-per-view PORN!

Contact: Stacey Holliday, Concerned Women for America, 202-488-7000 ext. 126

WASHINGTON, July 20 /Christian Newswire/ -- Concerned Women for America (CWA) says that if the Marriott hotels care so much about their customers, as indicated in their recent decision to ban smoking from hotel rooms, they should stop offering hard-core porn in their hotel rooms.

“Creating a smoke-free environment demonstrates a new level of service and care for our guests and associates,” said J.W. Marriott Jr., chairman and chief executive officer of Marriott International. “Our family of brands is united on this important health issue and we anticipate very positive customer feedback. … Demand for nonsmoking rooms continues to rise with new information from the Surgeon General on the hazards of secondary smoke.” See: http://marriott.com/news/detail.mi?marrArticle=137410

“We’ve been after Marriott for years to stop providing pay-per-view porn,” said Jan LaRue, CWA’s Chief Counsel. “But their excuse is that some customers want it. What’s that percentage? If it’s only about 5 percent, they’ve lost that excuse. I’m guessing that their cut from porn is a lot bigger than their cut from cigarette machines in the lobby.

“Marriott has placed itself in a perplexing box by banning smoker-friendly hotel rooms, even though 5 percent of customers want a smoking room. If it’s about ‘health,’ why are they banning smoking only in hotels in the United States and Canada? What about former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop’s report on the dangerous consequences of viewing pornography? What about the mental and psychological health consequences related to dependency on porn?

“With summer in full swing and many families looking for hotel accommodations during their vacation, we hope that Marriott will eliminate pornography as an amenity and lead the industry in creating a truly safe and wholesome environment.

“Not only would they reduce their potential legal liability related to a sexually hostile environment, I bet there would be a boost in sales as well,” LaRue concluded.

Concerned Women for America is the nation’s largest public policy women’s organization.

Well... working in the hotel industry.. i will tell you why for one and
not the other:
1. smoking ban.. so much cheaper to deal with clean up. No ashes and burn holes and burn marks all over the room. less washing of comforters and blankets. less time for maids to be stuck in a room cleaning up cigarette messes (and yes it is a pain in the ass and takes time)

2. porn.. while no hotel wants to admit their sources of income, they make a percentage of proceeds off of all pay-per-view movies whether porn or regular movies... they will not get rid of a system that pays them to provide a service that guests want.

its all about the money.. follow the money. And seriously what parent is going to let their child order a porn movie.. who is supervising them anyway. Also, there are ways for the hotel to turn off pay-per-view options. If you have a cash payment at the hotel, the system is turned inactive so as to not incure a charge.

28. I empathize on the cigarette clean-up issues...
Edited on Thu Jul-20-06 09:13 PM by hlthe2b
This has always been a real issue for me--dating back 20 years when no-smoking laws were non-existent. I have a near 100% trigger for severe migraine--cigarette smoke and residue. A room that had ever been rented to a smoker was left with enough residue to trigger an incapacitating migraine for me. Even with the advent of "non-smoker" designated rooms, I still risked facing horrendouse consequences, since some of those rooms would be used for smokers if they were overbooked.

So, while I have been able to "stabilize" my migraine triggers as I've gotten a bit older, I am very pleased to see some hotels go 100% non-smoking. 'Sorry smoking DUers, it isn't personal, but if you've ever had a 72 hour migraine that had you both wishing you had a gun in the house (and thankful later that you did not), you'd understand.

As for the porn.. geez these idiots need to get a life and yes, I agree it isn't going anywhere given the profits it brings in.

15. What are the "dangerous consequences" of watching porn...
... according to C. Everett Koop? My guess would be hairy palms or blindness.

Seriously though, what concern is it of these people? If they don't like it don't watch it. If you can't stand that the Hotel provides pay-per view porn, don't stay there. Are these people really that troubled by what other people do in the privacy of their own rooms? How does it effect them in any way?

18. Attacking porn will be the Religious Right's downfall.
Americans can put up with a lot. Attack gays, most people will say "Hell, I'm not gay. Who cares." Attack crude television on network TV, most people will say "Fine, I'll just watch cable." But porno is a whole different ballgame. People will fight to the death to keep one of the few releases they have left.

Edited on Thu Jul-20-06 09:07 PM by jayctravis
WASHINGTON, July 20 /Christian Newswire/ -- Concerned Women for America (CWA) says that if the Marriott hotels care so much about their customers, as indicated in their recent decision to ban smoking from hotel rooms, they should stop offering hard-core porn in their hotel rooms.

And seriously...is it "hard core" porn? The couple times I've looked at it all the explicit shots were edited out, or it was your typical boobies boobies boobies Cinemax-type movies.

Ahem. It's not "hardcore" unless there is graphic insertion.

I do know that the producers of the hardcore stuff do shots they can use to *make* them softcore (essentially very mature R rated) at the same time as they make the explicit ones. Perhaps that's what the people are referring to.

So...they are watching enough of this to recognize the movies are the same as an actual hardcore movie?

31. I just sent them this email.
I see where you're after the Marriott to get rid of showing porn in hotel rooms. I know a good way to help decrease porn viewing by a sizable amount. Since evangelical Christians' own surveys show that their population has the same or greater rate as the unwashed heathen when it comes to things like divorce, co-habitation before marriage, and enjoyment of porn, it might behoove you to clean up your own house. Once you get all your God-fearing men to stop spanking it to hot girl-on-girl action, then maybe you can start on the rest of us. After all, it's a well-known fact that whenever there's a convention of conservative religious men at a hotel that offers porn, that hotel makes some pretty good coin during the time that they're there.

So my suggestion to you is the next time your husbands have to go to a Baptist convention or something in another city, book him into a Motel 6 (they don't have porn) near the convention. Then when the activities end for the day, call that Motel 6's direct line and ask for his room number to make sure he's there. Sure your husband might not appreciate your meddling as well as missing out on, "Sorority Sex Kittens 4," but he'll eventually come around, and your marriage will be saved.

Hopefully, this works out for you. Let me know so I can give you the correct spelling of my last name for any awards you want to give me.

TlalocW
