Question: What Could Be More Important Than Filibustering Alito ????
And if whatever it is, is THAT important, what makes anyone think that the rePukes won't 'Nuclear Opt' THAT out???

Are we gonna keep (or lose) our last vestige of democracy (protecting the 'minority' from the 'majority') by invoking it during some wonkish debate over cell phone signal strength??? Is that what's gonna be the Dems last 'allowed' shot across the fascist bow???

And yeah... I think that the recent volley's of Gore\Clinton\ et.al., while encouraging, will end up meaning squat if the Dems roll over for Alito.

I say... filibuster, let the rePukes Nuke the Senate, don't show up for the calls for quorum....

Let it all be republican shit-stains on the U.S. Constitution!

:nuke::nuke::nuke:

SHUT... IT... DOWN... !!!

1. I completely agree
If the Republicans are going to threaten this "nuclear option" every time a filibuster is possible, and every time we just back down, then all we are doing is saving the filibuster for when they are the minority.

Frankly, I just want to see us filibuster SOMETHING, make the repugs use this nuclear option they keep threatening to use. Pull out all the stops, make them change as many rules as possible, and then, once we regain the majority, shove their faces in the mess they've created.

DICK POLMAN. Alito's expected confirmation challenges conventional wisdom http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/news/nation/13647860.htm

It was widely assumed, back when Justice Sandra Day O'Connor announced her imminent retirement, that the Senate Democrats - backed by majority public support - would mount a serious fight to derail any nominee who appeared skeptical about the constitutional right to an abortion. In the wake of President Bush's oft-stated plan to move the judiciary rightward, abortion was supposed to be the line in the sand.
Wrong.

5. I'm tired of seeing Pink TuTu Dems roll over.
FIGHT BACK!!!

Bush's approval rating is 40%, Dems shouldn't be such wimps! They should be opposing the GOP on EVERY IMPORTANT ISSUE.

8. Does that mean the general public is totally distracted?
I listen to Mike Malloy and I'm not sure what that means.

I am disgusted if Democratic leadership is waiting to see what the public mood is on Alito. GET OUT IN FRONT on these issues, that's what LEADERS DO!!!!

Do what's right, even if the public doesn't "get it"!!!

6. The Repugs aren't aiming to WEAKEN cell phone strength are they?!?
Those things work so crappily already. If the Repugs ARE looking to weaken cell phones, the Dems SHOULD save the Filibuster for that one! The people would REALLY be with us then! I can see millions of them converging on the Captiol, screaming "Can You Hear Us Now!" at the terrified and soon-to-be overthrown Republican regime.

10. A woman's right to choose is just one issue with Alito
It goes much deeper than just abortion, Alito is out of the mainstream, he is a conservative extremist.

Bush needs to appoint a moderate judge, or no deal. Instead, Bush keeps forcing his will on the Democratic leadership, and for some reason they keep rolling over, again and again! It has to stop!

7. I agree! Shut it down! It is so-o-o-o-o-o illegitimate for a President
who wasn't elected, and whose approval by the American people has been under 40% all year, and whose V-P's approval has been under 20%, and a President who furthermore has stated his intention to CONTINUE committing felonies, and who has committed hundreds of felonies already, to be appointing Supreme Court justices.

Shut it down! NOW!

But I do think there is one thing that is more imporant: Demanding transparent elections.

11. There is nothing as important
but our dems have sold us out for corporate campaign money.

The rich will still be able to get abortions.

The rich will still be able to buy adult entertainment.

The rich don't have to worry about workplace safety and fair labor laws.

Rich gay people don't need their partner's SS benefits.

Rich people don't have police checkpoints in their neighborhood.

etc.

12. This is of utmost importance
Edited on Tue Jan-17-06 10:53 PM by PWRinNY
Any issue, every issue that each of us feels is important - every single issue is in jeopardy if this man gets into the Supreme Court. Environment, global climate change, Constitution, Bill of Rights, separation of church and state, civil rights, workers rights, right to choose, you name it, we all stand to lose, not just years, but DECADES of progress with this man on the court. This country will go so far backwards our heads will spin right into the spanish inquisition. There is nothing more important at this time than making sure this man stays off our Supreme Court.

14. My thinking is they should do it for practice if nothing else
They need to get good at it. It might not stop Alito, but it might wake some people up. Also, they need to prove Democratic leadership is not an oxymoron.

15. What's more important? How about winning a presidential race...
...so we don't have to worry about the likes of Scalia and Roberts ever even having a chance. Oh, and it wouldn't hurt to win back some Senate seats as well.

Perhaps one would think of what indeed is important before they vainly throw their vote away on someone like Nader (yes, I'm pointing my finger at you Michael Moore!).

21. precisely my point
Gore v. Bush is the result of 5 GOP presidential terms-in-office to our 3.

By 2008 the ratio will be 9 to 3.

Face it, we are fucked for at least 16 years, and that still might not catch us up.

Think about that before you cast your vote "Green" next time.

and ps: shutting the governement down when the mainstream is not on board does not help you win presidential races. You kinda need more than 5 million votes (the number of estimated Democratic activists nationwide) to win the White House.

What more important is for Democrats to WAKE UP and get a better strategy to protect our rights. Their tired old game plan just failed again. If they had set the stage correctly they should have been able to discredit him in committee.

Wouldn't it be hilarious, though, if these recent appointment advocate a unilateral executive NOW and a Democratic or Independent President is elected in '08?!?!?!?!

The greedy freaks from hell who have exploited this nation and its people would be in caa caa so deep they'd NEVER crawl out.

Edited on Wed Jan-18-06 01:59 PM by pat_k
Alito is emblematic of unlimited executive power.
The fight against Alito is our Normandy in the campaign
to drive out the Bush regime and the ever-expanding
dictatorial powers they claim!

24. More important than the filibuster -- Democratic unity against Alito!
Before the filibuster can become a viable option, we have a tough threshold to cross. We must get unanimity from all the Senate Democrats against Alito.

The lack of unity against Roberts (who's basically Alito without as clear a paper trail) was appalling: 22 of 44 Democratic Senators actually voted in favor of confirming Roberts (despite ethical lapses and despite a record of right-wing judicial activism)!

Before filibuster can be considered a viable option we must first achieve unanimity against Alito among all 44 Democratic Senators!
