ALASKA VOLCANO OBSERVATORY INFORMATION RELEASE Tuesday, January 17, 2006 4:25 PM AKST (125 UTC)
AUGUSTINE VOLCANO (CAVW#1103-01-) 59.3633°N 153.4333°W, Summit Elevation 4134 ft (1260 m) Current Level of Concern Color Code: RED
The most recent explosive eruption began at approximately 7:58 AST, ended at approximately 8:03 A.M. AST (17:03 UTC). Since that time seismic and pressure sensor data indicate that small explosions may be occurring. These could produce small amounts of low level ash and could initiate small rock avalanches on the flanks of the volcano. Eruptive events similar to that which occurred this morning could resume at any time. In an overflight today airborne ash prevented scientists from approaching the volcano closely. Thus AVO was unable to obtain new gas data or make detailed visual observations.
AVO is monitoring the situation closely and will issue further updates as new information and analyses become available.

After last year, I mentioned to a friend that Mother Nature sure is pissed. First the tsunami, then earthquakes, then hurricanes. What's Next, I asked? Volcanos? It's happening now!

5. I had been, forgot to check today. |

Thanks for the reminder. Looks like that was a good one this morning, and the whole top of that sucker is smoking now, compared to a much smaller vent area Friday. link to the seismograph http://www.avo.alaska.edu/webicorders/webicorder.php?volcname=Augustine

for a while now. I was here for Augustine's eruptions in 1976 and 1986. So far we don't have much mess here in Anchorage, but if the winds change... The eruption today evidently sent ash 45,000 feet into the atmosphere.
