6. No.
Slaves in Egypt or Rome probably thought freedom was an impossible dream.

We still haven't rid our world of slavery, but we're closer.

We should never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever give up.

7. No. Because
no matter how horrific the war,
no matter the lessons learned,
no matter the trumpets proclaiming peace,
no matter the treaties signed pledging never again,
the next generation or the one after that will get some idea in their collective heads and stride of to Kill & Destroy.

8. So you are actually a yes, that it is impossible?
I'd have to agree, unfortunately. It's certainly what should always be our goal, but to think that we really could achieve peace on earth is probably naive. Unless about 4.5 billion people are wiped out of existence. Maaaybe with such a small population, humankind could peacefully coexist. Maybe.

10. Impossible as long as world leaders hold on to religion
Religion is the ultimate terrorist weapon. It uses fear of all-powerful beings to manipulate the gullible portions of the population.

As long as world leaders know they can manipulate the gullible with tales of fantasy, they will manipulate them into violence.

Imagine......

15. Or other dogmas.
Not just religious dogmas, though they are half of the problem. Anything that prevents free thinking is an enemy of peace.

World peace is possible, but only after we move beyond the religious and political dogmas that blind us and divide us.

11. No
No. In my opinion, greed is without a doubt the fundamental reason wars have been waged throughout the history of humanity (one could argue that it's not-- that it's either religion or politics, but I believe that religion and politics are simply the banner being carried to justify an already pre-determined aggresion based on greed).

Given that, unless we can assure that future generations have greed "bred" out, then there will always be that catalyst hanging over heads.

13. Impossible
At least, impossible during the lifetimes of anyone living today. Impossible during the lives of anyone born to anyone living today, too.

Maybe far, faaaaaaaaaar down the road, peace on Earth is attainable. Heck, anything is possible. But it's not likely.

Our history has been filled with violence, and there's no reason to think that's going to change anytime soon. It would take a complete overhaul of the type of people we are today, so much so that we probably wouldn't even recognize a future where there is peace on Earth.

on a massive scale. Peace starts within each person's heart.

18. conquer hunger and you will bring peace.
when every pregnant women is well fed, well cared for, and is without major stress, there will be no more warriors. that's a fact.
now that goal might be unachievable in the real world, but we could reach a tipping point where the peaceful are so much in the majority, that war would die out.

21. Just a statistical improbability
With 6 Billion inhabitants and climbing. Getting all of them to stop violence at the same time is a unlikely possibility anytime soon.

Not that it's not a worthwhile goal. But after thousands of years of conflicts in one part of the globe or another. Don't be too disappointed if it doesn't happen right away.

So that should make the job a little easier, even if it's not going to happen right away.

Human tolerance for those who are perceived to be part of another group has historically been very low.

22. No, we are a naturally warmongering species.
Edited on Fri Jul-21-06 10:08 AM by Odin2005
War's stupidity has only become apparent as a result of the increased lifespans caused by modern medicine, our longer lives have made us realize that life is precious, but our instincts haven't has the time to become adapted to this change. Back in the day when you only lived untill you were 40 being a warrior was a acceptable way to gain prestige, and therefore get more lovers, and therefore have more kids (this may also be why rape by soldiers is so disgustingly common throughout history).

25. I disagree
It's never 'people like you and me' who start wars, it's always the leaders who get us to go to war, usually by lying to us.

as long as there are different people, with different opinions, objectives and motives, there will never be total peace...

unless hippies ruled the world... then we'd have this:

38. No; ultimately something will kill us all and give us eternal peace.
I forget exactly how many days there have been since the end of WWII when no wars were being fought, but I *think* the answer is "6".

Till god make men of some other metal than earth, they will fight wars, for stupid reasons.
