Reuters: "Iraq as a political project is finished...moved to Plan B"

http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/MAC119287.htm

<snip>

"Iraq as a political project is finished," a top government official told Reuters -- anonymously because the coalition of Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki remains committed in public to a U.S.-sponsored constitution preserving Iraq's unity.

"The parties have moved to Plan B," the official said, saying Sunni, ethnic Kurdish and majority Shi'ite blocs were looking at ways to divide power and resources and to solve the conundrum of Baghdad's mixed population of seven million.

"There is serious talk of Baghdad being divided into east and west," said the official, who has long been a proponent of the present government's objectives. "We are extremely worried."

2. What a mess we've made of things
Another divided city. I guess Jerusalem wasn't enough. Seems like we are going back to the cold war, dividing countries and building walls again.

9. U.S Troops Kill Two Women and a Child in Iraq Today
The chaos in Iraq seems to have been pushed off the front page.

Over three years in and the violence is growing.

Violent attacks against civilians happen so frequently that it is hard to discern one news item for another.

Today, U.S. troops killed two women and a child. Americans expressed regret for the civilian casualties.

AP Story:

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Gunmen attacked two Shiite neighborhoods Friday in the same town where Sunnis opened fire on a market earlier this week, prompting Iraqi forces to call for American air support in a clash that killed at least 18 people, the Iraqi army said.

The attacks on Shiite neighborhoods occurred in Mahmoudiya, where 50 people were killed this week in a raid by Sunni gunmen on a market. Most of the victims were believed to be Shiites.

The 18 killed Friday included 11 attackers, four Iraqi soldiers and three police officers, the Iraqi army statement said.

Earlier, U.S. troops raided a neighborhood northeast of Baghdad, killing five people after gunmen fired from the rooftops of buildings, the U.S. military said. The dead included two women and a child.

The Americans expressed regret for the civilian deaths.

I feel the powerlessness of the Bushites, too.
This is history rolling right over them.
Get the troops out now!
Push the helicopters off the ship and get our poor soldiers home!

17. Ive been for a divided Iraq for a while
Edited on Fri Jul-21-06 07:12 PM by oxbow
I wrote about it as early as last November... and as sorry as I am to see it being discussed under such dire circumstances, I still think that it would be for the greatest good of all involved. There's too many historical and cultural blocks in the way of a united Iraq right now, and our presence isn't helping things either!
