It seems turnaround is not fair play, at least not in Congress

Congressman Under Fire For 'Outlaw Divorce' Remarks
by 365Gay.com Newscenter Staff
July 20, 2006 - 7:00 pm ET

(Washington) A Tennessee Democrat is under fire from Republicans over comments made earlier this week during the House debate on banning same-sex marriage.

(snip)

"What do our children learn when they see their parents getting divorced left and right, only to remarry and get divorced again? What kind of example does that set?

"Mr. Speaker, this House must lead by example," he said.

Some House Republicans are calling the remarks irresponsible while others are demanding a public apology.

1. What's wrong with what he said?
I don't see what's irresponsible about that statement.

3. Considering that a couple of years ago
the three congresscritters that sponsored the "Defense Of Marriage Act" had nine marriages and 8 divorces between them it's just more hypocrisy.

5. Demand an apology? Are you fucking kidding?
Republicans, apparently, support divorce and in fact endorse it!

11. Yes, ask Newt Gingrich, Bob Livingston and Ronald Reagan.
Oh wait. . .they also support adultery.

6. If, and only if
One of the biggest complaints I have with the opponents of anti-gay marriage is that they tell us it's a biblically based morality. O-kay-- arguable, but valid. Yet if those same opponents want to outlaw gay-marriage, they MUST also outlaw divorce for ANY reason other than death and infidelity and ANY sex outside of marriage (Biblically based also and mentioned much more than "man layin with man")

If, and only if the opponents of gay marriage were to include those provisions also, then I would believe they are doing it out of conviction rather than simply pandering to thier base.

7. Jesus said nothing about homosexuality but he was really harsh
on divorce. Live by the bible, die by the bible . . .

8. Hey, at least he's consistent in his call for "family values"...
Unlike, say, right-wing host Michael Medved, who dumps his wife and breaks up another guy's marriage, then writes a book with his new wife on how liberals are destroying America because they don't respect the sanctity of marriage the way conservatives do. :eyes:

9. It seems his tongue in cheek comments were taken out of context by us
He called them on their absurdity and now the House Republicans get the joke! Well, they get it, they are the butt of it and are not happy because of it.

Fuck 'em.

12. That should be the new mantra when Repigs bring up gay marriage.
"As long as they Republicans are unwilling to do anything about making divorce illegal we can not take them seriously when they talk about the sanctity of marriage."
