They think it's just like the superbowl. Sad, sad, sad.

61. The 3D graphics are almost completed!!!
A bird's eye view of the Israel / Lebanon border is shown and slowly zoomed into with a dark red background. Then out of nowhere, the words "Ground War" shoot into the screen and horray, ratings will go up as the masses go into a collective zombie-state of information underload.

Gee, like the US, the UK has squandered a lot of good will. Also done a lot of very hostile things to other peoples in the world for much longer than the state of Israel. By your own 'live and let live' philosophy, shall we assume you feel the same about the entire populations of the UK and US - not civilized enough to have our own countries?

37. It sounds like
we were thinking the same thing.

It's crazy - I don't support ANY of these invasions and IT MAKES ME SICK that people feel free to do that.

But I have to say - that Israel isn't worse than other similar imperial nations. But I also support the Palestinians.

To some people - that doesn't make sense - you have to support one side or the other.

I still expect them to sit down and work it out Without the US - to be honest. I don't think that we are any help.

If Israel is going to keep bombing people - I will say that those people have every right to bomb them back - and Israel should expect it.

After a large Jewish force was slaughtered by the Romans on a Friday night because they refused to fight on the Sabbath, it was ruled that fighting on the Sabbath is allowed in self defense.

There was this American Lt Cl saying - I can't believe they are showing this.

I don't see any other way either.

Even if we didn't have to fight it - we still have to have a force strong enough to do so.

And our units got torn up pretty good in those damn deserts.

It is a refit situation, too. Our GM equipment doesn't hold up so well in 130 degree heat.

There will be much more of this. Read the last sentence of the caption carefully:

A relative from the border village of Marwaheen, Muhammed Abdullah, 53, prays by coffins containing the bodies of Lebanese victims prior to their burial in a mass grave at the southern Lebanon city of Tyre, Friday, July 21, 2006. With a few mourners at hand, 72 victims of Israel's 10-day-old bombardment are buried in a mass grave in this southern Lebanese city. Lebanese have streamed out of the south, leaving some villages ghost towns, but with roads destroyed many are trapped in their homes in the face of a possible Israeli invasion.

Damn Israel!

This whole whole thing is such a tragedy that did not need to happen. I don't think that anyone should be rejoicing about it. It's quite disgusting.

76. OT just so I can think about something else
Arabic script is indeed beautiful.

لآ اِلَـهَ اِلاَّ لله محمد رسول ال

The text is so graceful. For a long time, representational art was banned in Islam, so artists turned to calligraphy.

You'll find some stunning pieces here:

http://www.arabiccalligraphy.com/ac/galleries.php
http://www.islamicart.com/main/calligraphy/index.html
http://www.al-bab.com/arab/visual/calligraphy.htm

No real relevance to the topic here, other than to lament the centuries-long descent of the region from the most sophisticated, peaceful, and tolerant culture of its day to an unending battleground.

79. The writing on the coffins is to identify the remains inside. It is too
dangerous to give these victims a proper burial so they are being buried in a mass grave. When the country is safe again, the bodies will be dug up and then will receive their proper burial rites.

This was discussed on one of the cable news channels this afternoon. I don't know if there is normally writing on coffins in the traditions of the Lebanese.

34. No surprise there, this is what the bush admin was holding off for...
Israel invades first then the bush admin makes empty noises, Israel pretends to ignore them until they have either accomplished whatever ill-conceived plan or are forced to retreat. Then and only then, on a pre-arranged schedule will Israel stop "ignoring" the US, meanwhile the invasion will continue, the numbers of dead and wounded innocents will continue to grow.

This was the plan from the start of this, imo. If it hadn't been the capture of two Israeli soldiers, they would have found another "reason".

Hi Spazito! Things are looking very grim indeed....

We are on our way to Canada soon for vacation...with the way things are going in the world, I'm starting to think we might be staying....

What do you think would happen if some radical group in Canada lobbed missiles from across the border at American Civilian populations? Would that then justify the US sending bombing raids on the southern border of Canada to get the "terrorists"? What about sending in Ground troops to Canada? But, but, but if its in the name of "defense" against Terrorists, then its okay, right? How would Canadians feel about it? Would they stand by and let their country be destroyed?

What do you think the Lebanese people are going to do when the Israelis invade? :eyes:

I feel sick....Things are going downhill fast. And the scary thing is our administration seems to have wanted this....

55. Hey Pachamama! It IS going downhill very fast, it is very frightening!
Part of why I find it more frightening that I thought I would is because I don't think the bush cabal thought everything would go to shit at the same time which, by the headlines, it has:

Iraq is in a civil war, the American supply lines may now be in jeopardy
Afghanistan's chaos is worsening, close to anarchy, according to the NATO general
Somalia is firing up again

I truly believe they thought, not unlike the chocolate and flowers fantasy, they could control each of the situations they inflamed separately and not have them ALL occur at once. Add to that their credibility is totally non-existent across the globe and it is a scary situation indeed.

I am sure you will have a wonderful time in Canada, I have just moved from British Columbia to Alberta so I am closer to my children and grandchildren but am living in a "liberal" oasis in the middle of conservative hell, lol.

Re your question, after reading the bush response to Turkey's threat to do exactly what Israel is doing for the exact same reasons, their response being don't you dare attack or invade the Kurdish area in Iraq, all I can do is shake my head and keep picking my chin up off the floor at the hypocrisy and delusional words and actions that are emanating from them.

A large group of sweating dignitaries looked out from the dais onto 42nd Street where the overflowing crowd chanted, sang songs, and lifted banners that said, "No to Terror!" Senator Frank Lautenberg from New Jersey, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton from New York, Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel and numerous Jewish community leaders addressed the crowd.

You know better than anyone else that what we are doing is doing your own work: fighting terror.... And to those countries who claim we are using disproportionate force, I have only this to say: you're damn right we are!"

51. What is it good for? Absolutely nothing!
What will war gain anyone! Absolutely worse than nothing!

So who is the one starting this? Not the people.

And how long, and how many will suffer, before this is over? And who will shoot the last bullet? And then what? We will be right back where we are now, except with less.

It is only a losing game. STOP!

56. That's right. This would UNDERMINE Israel's security by sowing ever
more hate and desperation. That's what gave Hezbollah its success in the first place. It's not just the funding from other Islamic states, it's the local desperation and hatred that makes it work for them.

My opinion: the ruling elements of Israel's and the US governments WANT ESCALATION. They want to INCITE ATTACKS BY Syria and especially Iran. They WANT war with Iran. They have for a long time. Iran and Syria haven't responded sufficiently yet to "justify" such escalation, so now we see Israel pushing up the ante.

And the US congress has passed resolutions giving Irael absolutely open season to do whatever the hell it wants and calling for immediate sanctions (with options to escalate there too) on Iran and Syria:

73. And money complicates it even more.
Every time a bullet is fired. Every time a bomb is dropped, someone makes a dollar.

And the same thing goes for fear there as here. Spread fear, start war, profit. Rinse and repeat.

And so, the bottom line is the oldest and hardest thing to do. But the only thing to do that works is- FORGIVENESS.

Until then, the cycle repeats.

It's easy for me to say. However, as a cyclist, I've had a lot of practice. Try riding a bike in America. You'll find so many assholes in cars who want to prove their power. It takes a lot of forgiveness to not start carrying a gun on my bike rides. Really sad. The meek shall inherit something. Because the bullies are the losers.

Assuming their army is just about as efficient as ours (thats a joke) I'd guess by about 9 am (PST) tomorrow - all hell breaks lose along that border.

78. There's really no such thing as a "surprise" invasion today
And you can still gauge the timing of US military operations by how many pizzas the Dominos that delivers to the Pentagon sends out in a night (I know a reporter who sits in front of that Dominos and counts the deliveries).

Israel is gathering troops south of Lebanon

Israel is warning the Lebanese to get as far north as they can.

Sadly, the die is cast.

I was watching it this AM with a sick sense of forboding - they way I'd watch a car crash, I suppose.

If you were on the other side, and you knew - from watching TV, even - where to hit somebody - wouldn't you??

This whole matter is a strange affair.

All out war ahead as Israel says: Get out of southern Lebanon

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,251-2279462,00.html

Rice: Ceasefire will be a false promise

A ceasefire soon is impossible, says the US Secretary of State Condolezza Rice.
(...)
In opposition to the UN General Secretary Kofi Annan, who yesterday appealed for immediate ceasefire, Rice excludes the possibility for a ceasefire without a change of the original situation in Lebanon.

- A ceasefire will be a false promise, if it brings us back to status quo, she says.
(...)
Hizballah is the source of the problem, and Syria knows what to do, says Rice, and defended the US decision not to talk to the Hizballah or Syria.
(...)
The UN special envoy to the ME, Terje Rød Larsen, made a statement in line with the US Secretary of State about a permanent solution to the crisis.
In a live interview with the BBC, Larsen hinted that the 'energetic' diplomatic initiative from the US is a reason for optimism.
- It's beginning to arise a remarkable international consensus (agreement) about how to solve this crisis. We need a new political reality in Lebanon. This is the US focus and it is the focus of the Security Council, says the Norwegian diplomat.

Rød Larsen and the two other special UN envoys met today with Secretary of State Rice and UN ambassador John Bolton at the Waldorf Astorie hotel in New York.

(...)

Rød Larsen says it has to be established a security zone at the so-called 'blue line' at the border between Lebabon and Israel. Here Israel will have a 'robust' military presence, together with international peace forces, he says.
It also has to be a 'full implementation' of the Security council resolution 1559 from September 2004, he points out. This calls for disarmament of all Lebanese and non-Lebanese (ie: Syrian) militia in Lebanon.
