Friday’s announcement puts pressure on Western-leaning President Viktor Yushchenko to speed up his decision about his Orange Revolution rival’s bid to become the new prime minister.
Taras Chornovil, a top lawmaker in the coalition, said that if Yushchenko puts forward Viktor Yanukovych’s name on Monday, votes on naming the rest of the Cabinet could be held on Tuesday, in time to meet a constitutional deadline.
This former Soviet nation has been embroiled in political crisis since Yushchenko’s Kremlin-backed rival for the presidency in 2004 came out ahead in March parliamentary elections.
The pro-Russian opposition’s strong performance reflected disillusionment at the sluggish economy and a split within the reformist pro-Western team that came to power after the 2004 mass protests over election fraud known as the Orange Revolution.
