"Condoleezza Rice" and "diplomacy"
Aren't those mutually exclusive terms?

:shrug:

In other words (and given the rhetoric coming out of DC and the US UN delegation lately, she ain't heading to the Middle East on Sunday to do much of anything constructive in stopping the killing.

2. I am posting this where ever posts on Condi Rice's statement
...appears and I'm hoping that a DUer will find the link to the actual follow-up statement that Condi made, which I heard below.

<snip>

Rice: A cease-fire would be a false promise

A cease-fire would be a false promise if it simply returns us to the status quo, allowing terrorists to launch attacks at the time and terms of their choosing and to threat innocent people, Arab and Israeli, throughout the region. That would be a guarantee of future violence.

Instead, we must be more effective and more ambitious than that. We must work urgently to create the conditions for stability and lasting peace.

<...here is what I heard Condi say as a follow-up>

4. After the press statement, Condi was asked by an anonymous reporter
...to clarify if she planned to ask for a ceasefire and Condi repeated the statement by saying, "...it makes no sense to have a cease fire when it <meaning the fighting> will just start up again."

I heard her say that in a short sound clip on the NPR news-break over our local public radio station (UCF- 89.9FM) in Orlando FL at 4:00PM EDT today. I have not been able to get a repeat transcript, video or audio stream of that statement, but I did hear her specifically say it. I checked the NPR web-site when I got home and the only video is of Condi's press statement which was actually made earlier in the day that you have quoted above.

These bastards want an expanded war and all the carnage that will come with it!

...who, himself, belongs in the same category as "Jumbo Shrimp." Could Mel Brooks himself have done a better job of populating a mythical White House?

(On edit: So far as why she's going -- well, heck, Tel Aviv has shoe sales, too!)
