Poll question: Who's your favorite progressive talk show host?
I was sitting here listening to the rebroadcast of Thom Hartmann on the White Rose website, and felt like posting this poll question. I love Mike Malloy, Sam Seder, Stephanie Miller, Randi and RFK Jr./Pap, but I think Thom Hartmann is my favorite. Who's your favorite?

because her show is a cartoon for the ears, different from the others-it allows me to laugh at those who need to be laughed at. There are days when I've felt like crying, and Steph and Voice Diety Jim Ward have laughed me into a more hopeful mood.

5. Hands down it's Ian Masters on Pacifica Radio
His show is only 2 hours a week, the first hour is interview and the second hour is phone calls. But I've listened to all the others and his is by far the most intelligent and with the best guests. He gets literally everyone on his show. And he's frankly a brilliant interviewer.

Otherwise, I'd go with Bernie Ward and Randi Rhodes, 2nd and 3rd.

Amy Goodman is my favorite professive host on radio but I'm not sure you'd call her show a 'talk show'.

He's the smartest and he debates repukes on a regular basis in true style. I mean who has the balls to debate people from Ayn Rand?

Thats not to say I don't listen to Stephanie Miller, Rachel Maddow and Randi Rhodes on a daily basis, he's just better and more experienced. I get the comedy from Steph and Randi. The quick front page from Rachel, and if Mike weren't so late, I'd listen to him, he's my get in a rage host.

50. It is Mike's mission in life to kick
repuke ass. He doesn't hold back in his contempt for the Bush Crime Family, and he does his homework. Deserves a hell of a lot better than his late night slot. In LA they've pushed him back to a tape delay at midnight, and then around 1 or 1:30, they cut the power. Clear channel owned KTLK, our Air America affiliate, is apparently too chicken to let him be heard.

Hands down. I make sure I'm awake early enough on my days off to listen to her and Ward is only great. They are funny while at the same time scvoring political points. I think Seder may be a close second. Randi is starting to annoy me, she's in love with her voice, Franken isn't bad, Hartmann is quite good as well. We don't get Malloy around here and besides that, he's on too late for me.

The show is a miracle. The energy stays at a zinging level for three hours.

Do you have any idea how hard it is to do 15 hours of comedy a week? Thank god for the Bush Administration, or Steph would have to go back to basic cable.

45. Easy, Mike Malloy, the fire-breathing liberal.
Edited on Fri Jul-21-06 07:55 PM by longship
Second place, Sam Seder. This guy has come along wonderfully.

Third place, Ring of Fire - RFK Jr and Pap. These guys are tight and have great interviews.

Fourth place, Thom Hartman. Very informative. If he didn't shamelessly promote himself and his books all the time he could be near the best. "Lunch with Bernie" is as good as it gets.

Fifth place, Randi Rhodes. If she would learn to shut up and let her guests speak for themselves she would be near the top.

Honorable mentions:

Marc (Maron) and Mark (Riley) for the absolutely best issue framing in the history of talk radio on their sadly defunct "Morning Sedition". This was the only talk show that gave Malloy any contest. Now gone, Malloy stands alone.

Bernie Ward, "The Lion of the Left" and Ray Taliaferro. True fire-breathers. Nobody can take down a Freeper better than Bernie and Ray. Bernie has encycloepedic memory; Ray has awesome experience and grasp of history. KGO rocks the liberal late night.

Rachel Maddow - for the best pure news/commentary program on the radio. This show is tight as hell. She keeps things moving. Pointed, edgy commentary. Near perfection for this type of format.

Mark Riley - Unsung hero of the morning airwaves. A real professional. Deserves to have a more widespread audience. He really made Morning Sedition work.

Hoe-hum award:

Al Franken: His usual great comedic edge is sadly missing. Too afraid to take strong stances. However, he rises to a very high level with Tom Oliphant and Joe Conason segments.

Jerry Springer: Why? Milk toast host spews more milk toast. Soporific content and delivery. No edge at all. Issue framing is weak and he does nothing to punctuate what few good points he makes.

72. Good synopsis.
I pretty much agree, especially on Randi and Al. I wish she would let people talk. Al unfortunately jumped the shark when he started running for the senate. I am a long time fan of his, and he still has some of the best guests and breaks lots of good information, but he has lost his edginess.

Ditto on Jerry Springer. A good, smart man with no puctuation. My local AAR station WLRN, replaced him with Stephanie Miller, a good move. Steph is very entertaining. Bad news: station is going to replace Rachel and Mark with a local guy I never heard of. Rachel makes my morning! I will miss her dearly, mornings I'm on the road.

Come to think of it, Randi Rhodes has a similar stutter and I can't stand listening to any of them and their tiresome radio-voice-schtick any more. And the worst by far is Laura Flanders. Her voice makes me want to vomit gold cuff links. Really, really irritating.

Tom Hartmann, Robert Kennedy, Jr., Mike Malloy, Sam Seder, a few locals, that's about it.

Air America needs better talent.

Agree on Randi. I love her, she's the goddess, but she is a little too self-obsessed at times, and when she has guests on, she doesn't let them speak. (Except Greg Palast and Sheila Jackson-Lee - they don't let Randi just dominate the conversation.)

It's hard to choose just one favorite.

I could live without Jerry Springer and Al Franken though (except when Conason or Oliphant is on, or if Rachel or Sam is subbing).

Stephanie is great; Sam Seder is great; Thom Hartmann is amazing; Rachel is so talented; I love Mike Papantonio...it's really hard to choose.

Although, since it is a weekly show, without the pressures of a 5 day schedule, it probably is not really in the same category as the other shows. More like a weekly news magazine, like 'NOW' when Bill Moyers was on.
