For my 10,000th post....to my DU friends of heart, a note of hope. |
|
We are all Americans, and it is this that binds us. When the mundane and the routine seem worthless and hope is dim, we need to remember that we are one nation. When events of the world overwhelm the events of daily life we need to draw strength from one and other and remember that the tasks of daily living do have meaning. Now the dark uncertainty of war and oppression weigh heavily on our hearts and minds. I've been in that darkness before. I remember feeling that way when I was trapped in Iran during the Iranian revolution and a good part of the Iran-Iraq war. The world lost its color for a while and I tended to drift from day to day in a place where nothing seemed to have meaning yet everything was monumentally important. I can now label those feelings as ones of helplessness and depression. What kept me focused were the routines of daily life...the laundry, the shopping, storytime with my kids, endless floor scrubbing sessions, and even the Monday get together of foreign wives--anything to get from day to day and through those long nights when terror rained from the sky. Gradually, that need to get from day to day coalesced into a realization that I needed to find a way to take control of my situation and figure out how to get permission from my ex-husband to get my kids out to safety. At some point, the world started to have colors in it again. Life must renew itself and these routines, no matter how insignificant, contribute to feelings of strength, purpose and hope. We all need to renew. So grab on to those things which seem insignificant now. They are the strands of your life. Reweave them and we will be able to serve our nation in its hour of need.
