I have come to the conclusion that the reason no one is solving the Mid East problem is because no one asks the right question. Everyone keeps talking about religion and Jew vs. Muslim and Shia vs. Sunni. However, it seems to me that this is a class war. Within Israel, the Palestinians live in poverty within an affluent society. Income disparity has been shown to be more distructive to the health and psyche than absolute poverty. It is worse to live in Harlem than Bangladesh by some health parameters such as depression, suicide, family violence.
Outside Israel, the Saudi Royals are another class problem. They squander their nation's oil wealth while many people in the small muslim countries around them live in relative poverty. The Saudis have imported slaves and serfs from Africa and South Asia. They live a lifestyle that is so corrupt that they are always at risk of being overthrown. This is why they cling to their Wahabhi sect, which claims that only a monarchy can be truly devout. Their arch enemies are the Shias of Iran who believe that clerics should run a country---no room for corrupt monarchs there. The Saudis could solve the Palestinian problem today by pouring financial aid to that region, as the US did to Japan and Germany after WWII. However, it helps Saudi Arabia to have the Israel-Palestine conflict as a distraction, with Israel as a lightening rod to draw muslim wrath. So, they keep Palestine poor and unhappy. They keep the middle east mad at Israel. They keep Israel strong by having the US, their puppet, provide money and military support.
Meanwhile, Iran wants to win all the countries that Saudi Arabia through Israel and the US have been kicking around to its side, so that it can control the Middle East and its massive oil wealth. So now, a lot of innocent people are in the middle of a great big turf war over oil, which is the same as a battle over money. The Big Players are Iran and Saudi Arabia, though you do not see them. The battle contestants are Israel and Hezbollah and the US with Lebanon and Iraq being the battlefields.
It makes no sense to send the US in to broker peace since we are one of the paid gladiators, fighting for the Saudis. Nor does it make sense to have a muslim country come in as the main peace broker, since Israel will object. A non-oil producer like Russia or China will have its own interests in mind. Plus, you need someone charismatic, someone that other world leaders trust but also someone that poor people can trust.
There is really only one person for the job. Hugo Chavex. His nation has all the oil it needs, so he isnt going in to cut a sweet oil deal like Russia or China would. He is not Jewish or Muslim. He is a man whom the poor can respect. He is charismatic. He has taken an interest in the plight of other countries. He will be able to see through the bs to the root economic problems.
I say lets draft Hugo Chavez to tackle the crisis in the Middle East.
