Care to hear about the anti-Bush conversation I had with my aunt today?
We were going to see "Pirates of the Caribbean" and she said that she had just been thinking about how during an election Republican states are referred to as "red", which is traditionally the color of hatred and blood while Democratic states are "blue", which is the color of peace and hope. So I brought up the stem cell research veto and she "Damn Bush."

And then she told me that for a while, at the beginning of *'s presidency, she tried to be respectful as he was the president and her son (who is only 8 now) was so young that she didn't want to teach him to disrespect the president. But now she said that she doesn't even try anymore. For example, she said that he asked her the other day what she was watching on TV and she said she was watching something about the war. He asked why there was war and she told me that all she could say was that "Because President Bush is an idiot."

On the way home from the movie she told me that her husband's officemate/supervisor is an avid Republican and they get in arguments almost every day. More importantly, one of her son's best friend's mother and father are also avid Republicans and one day when my uncle went to pick up his son at the friend's house he happened to notice two Ann Coulter books on the shelf so he teased the couple about it. Then he came home and he and my aunt freaked about letting their son into a house that reads Ann Coulter.

The most priceless story she told me was that her son's teacher made some sort of pro-Bush/Republican comment that she can't remember now and he came home and repeated it. My uncle said that he should go to school and tell his teacher that he was a bleeding heart liberal and my cute little cousin dutifully said he would do just that until my aunt worried that might get him in trouble, his being only 8 and all.

Thanks for listening.

I've NEVER understood how any teacher, at least a public school one, can be a Republican.
I got my pro-Dem digs in before I retired, though! ;)

Three cheers for your aunt!

6. Try teaching.....
in a high school in rural Southwestern PA, redneck central. I had a great relationship with my students, but one told me, "you know you are going to hell because you are voting for Kerry." I asked him why, and he said because the Christian radio station his Mother listened to, said so. We had so many teachers that were Bushites, and I could barley stand to speak to them. I was amazed by their stupidity. I have been retired for a year, but I do miss my little rednecks, I loved them!

3. two groups I can never understand being repubs are
teachers and farmers.
Let's hope your aunt & uncle channel some of their energy into working for candidates. Arguing with idiots saps your strength without any results.

4. My uncle actually voted for the very first time in 2004...
at my aunt's urging. He's about 44, I think.

During the campaign my grandmother asked my aunt if she wanted one of the yard signs (that my sister and I got for her while canvassing) but she said that she didn't want to push it with my uncle as she had just convinced him to vote.

So it sounds like one step at a time is working if he's arguing and hates Coulter!
