GOP pushes to take over state offices

Experts doubt sweep likely

By NANCY BADERTSCHER

Published on: 07/22/06

Georgia Republicans are out to try to tighten their hold on state government this year by going after Democrats in down-ballot elected offices.

The GOP wants "to operate state government from top to bottom," House Speaker Glenn Richardson (R-Hiram) said in an interview this week.
election

"We think we can do it more efficiently and more effectively, and more in line with the desire of a majority of the people."

Republicans have controlled the governor's office and state Senate since 2003, the Georgia House since 2005.

But they've not been able to claim some important and historically Democratic offices — attorney general, secretary of state, and labor and agriculture commissioners.

The threat is thrown out there and Dems ought to mad as hell at this brazen statement. They must be stopped, somehow, someway. Can you say Nazi takeover.

5. No offense to the South
But I bitched heavily because I have to go through Atlanta this summer. The South is a disgrace to this country, minus the good folk democrats.

7. Ex-CUSE me....
...but have you actually ever gotten to know any non-'good folk democrat' Southerners?

Please be careful about generalizations. I know folks in Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, Alabama, and Texas whose politics would stand your hair on end but who would give you the shirts off their backs if you were hurtin', welcome you into their homes and give you a fabulous home-cooked meal if they thought you were hungry, and be most cordially polite and respectful about their differences with your looney Northern Librul notions, because, after all, you're company and the tradition in the South is to be mannerly to company.

There're plenty of good folks in the South even if they don't agree with your politics. America wouldn't be what we are today, the good and the bad, without the South. I was born & raised in MN but proud to have been a borderline Southerner (MD) for eight years and very appreciative of all I learned and experienced on many trips among the Southern states.

exasperatedly,
Bright

13. Oh,please.........
Most southern people are racists. Why do you think they vote for repukes? I've been around plenty of them myself and they throw the N word around like it's nothing.I like the DEM southerners, but I can't stomach the Trent Lott crowd. No way.

8. One word - REDISTRICTING
The Supreme Court's decision to allow state legislators to redistrict Congressional districts whenever they want means that there is going to be a heck of a lot of money pouring into state legislative races.

The state legislators draw the districts, so watch them draw the money now that the USSC has given them the greenlight to redraw any Congressional district they feel like when and if the majority party at the state house switches over. Most Congressional districts are not competitive as it is. You'd better believe that the Republicans are salivating over the opportunity to take over state houses as soon as possible and draw as many districts as they can to their liking - NOW!!!

9. This is why Federalism is at the top of their agenda. n/t
But if the tide turns, like it might in this election, it all could backfire on them.
