"From a marketing point of view, you don't introduce new products in Aug."
-Andy Card explaining the timing of the Iraqi War PR campaignAfter a recent Pentagon briefing about Iraq, the press dutifully reported that the "plan" tentatively included a 2-brigade draw down by September. -And not not not! one of those sissy, cut-and-run, non-Republican, retreat-means-the-terrorists-win draw downs that people back from vacations would notice and associate with the upcoming mid-term elections, either. So don‘t be fooled; this was a manly, non-Democratic, booyah-victory-is-ours-thanks-to-Mr-War-Preznit plan. We learned all about that distinction when Gen Casey indicated there would be troop reductions this year, the day after Democratic senators were mocked for requesting the same thing -only in their fringe-y, America-hating, estrogen-dripping voices.
As our fabulous SecDef might say, plans
change:
U.S. moving more troops into Baghdad
…..
The U.S. command had drawn up plans to reduce the number of U.S. combat brigades in Iraq from 14 to 12 by September. But that plan has been shelved for the time being because of the security crisis in the capital.
So here's what I think: That was too soon. They were afraid that no one would remember it by Nov and it wouldn't help them politically. Barring something like a dirty bomb attack in downtown Omaha, I'll look for a cosmetic draw down mid- to late Oct, regardless of what reality-based conditions we're hearing about on the ground.
For this administration, war is nothing more than a vehicle to power and the wealth that accompanies it.
