Angela Davis was WONDERFUL tonight |
|
Angela Davis spoke tonight at Aycock Auditorium on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The auditorium was literally packed--they were turning people away. She spoke for about 45 minutes. There were so many points that she touched on (and dammit I didn't bring anything to write on  ), I can only list a few key phrases.
What she DID say: ~"George W. Bush should be impeached!"
~She asked the audience if we'd seen or read Al Gore's speech from yesterday and then praised what him for describing Bush's criminal activities. She mentioned Gore's speech SEVERAL times.
~She talked about Dr. ML King's sermon on the war in Vietnam and its relevance today in regards to our illegal war on Iraq.
~She talked at length about hurricane Katrina and the administration's treatment of people in NOLA. And also asked what Dr. King would say about what happened in NO.
~She addressed what she calls "structural racism" especially in reference to Katrina and how everyone in the media were so quick to assume that the stories of rapes and murders in the Superdome and at the Convention center were true--without any real evidence. She also noted that the Superdome was built on a poor people's cemetary.
~She discussed the prison industrial complex at some length. Class and race issues etc.
~She took questions from the audience and the first question was from a young man who asked in essence, "You've told us about the problems, what can we do as young people to solve them." And her answer was GOLDEN! She smiled and said, "It's not up to me as an elder to tell you what to do. You have to figure these things out and think for yourself."
~Finally she said "We have to find our own drum majors for justice!"
There were no hecklers just one lame-assed, freep-tard College Republican who I hoped had already graduated last year. He yammered a question to Davis--something along the lines of "Weren't you a member of groups like the Black Panthers and the Communist Party that have killed thousands of people over the years?" He writes for the school newspaper and gets his rocks off calling the professors in the History Dept. Socialists and Commies. She graciously answered him and refuted his claims about Black Panthers and communists killing people and he lumbered off back to his seat.
A fine evening. The Neo-Black Society Gospel Choir totally blew off the rafters. I'll keep this evening in my memory along with that of the lecture Dr. Cornel West gave at UNCG last year.

4. thanks for the report, and glad to know Angela still out there |
|
fightin' the good fight. Does she still teach at SFU?
I feel some momentum building, looking for an outlet. How do we, as a party, channel all that raw, young energy to its best effect?
