Pop Quiz.. History.. (no cheating)
Pop Quiz.. History.. (no cheating)

Here's my idea.. This is a free association sort of quiz to test what we (as adults) have pop into our minds when we hear or read something..

I'm not asking for the "specialists" among us who are history teachers, phds, professional historians.. I am going for the "regular joes" on the board..

I'm aiming for the stuff that is stuck to the "roof of your brain"....the stuff you learned FIRST about things..and the stuff that is ALWAYS there..
(Just want y'all to know, I DO know more about these things..I am after the "crusty residue" that is always there without having to think about it:P..)

Just copy the list and write next to it the FIRST thing that comes to mind when you read the words

disclaimer:.. What you think of may or may not be even TRUE..I am after the stuff that clogs our brains about things/people/events and how what we were taught as kids remains with us...always...

(no need for lengthy responses ...unless you cannot help yourself:P..)

I'll do my responses in a reply...(don't peek at other people's answers until you put yours down though, or it might influence your first responses..

Feel free to add your own.......(in a separate reply...label Quiz ..pt 2...pt 3..etc and your answers to them in reply so people don't see yours until they put theirs)

be HONEST too.. no one's out to shame anyone because they remember something silly.. It's about how we are taught things in school, how much we retain..what we retain, and what a waste it is to be taught "trivia" when our brains are MOST receptive to really learning..

here goes:

4. Mine were rather close to yours, except for Paul Revere
My first thought was "AND THE RAIDERS."

http://tralfaz-archives.com.nyud.net:8090/coverart/R/revere_likef.jpg

I imagine that dates me, a bit! I then thought "One if by land, two if by sea, and I on the opposite shore will be..."

69. Question ...
Edited on Sat Jul-22-06 11:10 PM by RoyGBiv
Sally Hemmings was one of the FIRST things you learned about Jefferson?

I can understand it being stuck to the roof of your brain now. I'm just curious if this is really one of the first things you learned about him.

OnEdit: I'm actually asking this because the first things I learned about a lot of these things aren't stuck to the roof of my brain now, and I suspect this is the same for a lot of people.

78. Which is as it should be ...

New, more relevant information should chase out the less relevant information.

Gotta find something to work on that "cherry tree" thing, though. :-)

Thanks.

86. Yeah ...

I'd respond, but my answers would end up being essays and bore everyone to death, which isn't what you intended with this.

And this is a really interesting experiment that is quite illuminating. It's not that people are wrong (although some answers are incredibly so) just that, as you say, a lot of what first pops into our heads is essentially meaningless.

For example, the first thing that pops into my head about the Delaware River is the beginning of the Industrial Age in the Americas because it was used as the route of the first shipment of anthracite coal to Philadelphia, laying the foundations of so many complex issues that affect us to this day. There was significant debate about it at the time, from many angles, and some of those debates are on-going. Naturally this was not the first thing I learned about the river, and I did not learn this in high school, nor even in basic college courses. I learned it doing research on the Industrial Revolution and forming a thesis on it being both a great step forward and one of the world's greatest curses, this dichotomy in fact being the foundation of why it is so difficult for us to deal with weighing environmental protection, quality of life, and profit motives against each other today.

That "cherry tree" thing would be on a test, or perhaps something about a coin in reference to the Delaware, or if we're lucky, the bit about Washington's tactical maneuvering, but if these tidbits are not placed in the context of how legends have shaped our historical memory or some broader lesson about military tactics and strategy with regard to the Delaware crossing, this all means nothing unless you happen to end up on Jeopardy.

As others have said, thanks for an interesting thread that isn't centered on that other subject.

48. Thanks so much, cali

This was the goal.. There are a lot of really ugly words flying back and forth because of the current goings on.

What I KNOW though, is that no one is deliberately "misguided, wrongheaded, willfully ignorant..whatever".. We just don't or CANT know everything about everything.. Having said that, we ALL are allowed to have opinions on what's happening, even if we don;t KNOW the whole backstory.

What we know is determined by what we have LEARNED.. Taking a look at the answers to the quiz, tells me that we might have all had the same teachers or attended the same schools...no matter our ages..

Schools concentrate on so much drivel and trivia (like our media), we MUST cut people some slack.. We all cannot know everything, but as people we ARE entitled to express how things affect us or what we think of them..

I think that most people here ARE making a valiant effort to learn as much as we can,.BUT for the billions of people who will not take my quiz and see the commonality of the answers, well.. we pretty much know how much THEY know too....and some of them are in positions to make decisions for all of us :scared:

I taught a lesson about the Little Boy and the Fat Man and the way each worked and the differences between them and hen how they were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and how Kokura was the luckiest city in the world, and at the end of the lesson I asked for questions and a ninth grade girl asked me...

"Is the Fat Man still alive today?"

Anything to take my mind of Lebanon :(
Incidentally, I'm a Brit so appologies in advance for a total lack of knowledge of US history :D

George Washington: That Cherry tree. You've been into deforestation ever since.

The Potomac/Delaware River: Seem to recall someone crossed the Delaware. Might have been important but I was probably busy eyeing up the girl at the next desk.

1066: Ahh, home ground :) Battle of hastings, Harold's army doing a forced march the length of England just to get their arses kicked by the Normans.

Paul Revere: Something about a message and a horseshoe. Think Yanke Doodle fits in there somewhere.

"Remember the Maine": No, can't say I do. :)

Corregidor: Sounds like a passageway made out wrinkled cardboard.

Gen McArthur: McArthur's park is melting in the dark, the sweet green icing running down...

Fatboy: One the atomic bombs droped on Japan, but I forget which one.

Antietum: What happened to Uncle's cakes?

Abe Lincoln: Big hat. Big Statue. Big fan of theatre.

Julius Caesar: The Ides of March. Infamy, infamy, they've all got it in for me!

JFK: Duck!

FDR: Little Orphan Annie. How sad is that?

Ho Chi Minh: It's a trail in the east somewhere, but I'm a bit vague on it.

Golda Meir: Err, who?

November 11: WWI cease-fire

June 14: Sounds like a nice day for a wedding...

Gen. Custer: Who gave an army to a blond? Bad idea.

USSR: Nice people, shame about the gulags.

Eisenhower: Boom Boom. Heads the list of "Famous people called Dwight".

Nixon: Should have fitted a burgular alarm.

Egypt: Dead guys in big buildings.

Martin Luther King: Had a dream.

Thomas Jefferson: Actually, apart from hanging out with other famous dead people, I can't think of anything he actually did.

I guess that's just a Anglo-centric education, - After checking, the only civil war battles that ring any bells are Ft Sumter and Gettysburg - everything else is just noise, which is a little disturbing... I could waffle about Crecy & Agincourt for a week, though.

Well, that and too much BBC humour. :)

"Fatboy" made me think of Fat Man and Little Boy together ... not ever having heard of "Fatboy Slim." (I guess you did too.)

"Little Boy" was dropped on Hiroshima by the Enola Gay.
"Fat Man" was dropped on Nagasaki by the Bock's Car.

Edited on Sun Jul-23-06 08:19 AM by rzemanfl
133 Rosenberg, "U.S. Nuclear Stockpile" p. 28, p. 26, Table 1; historian Michael S. Sherry in Preparing for the Next War, calls the bombs "Fat Boy and Thin Man" at p. 190, Feis, Japan Subdued, calls them "Fat Boy" and "Lean Boy" or "Thin Boy" pp. 60, 110; it apparently takes awhile for these things to get settled.

119. 1992-1997
Senior Research Scientist at the Pacific Northwest Laboratory at the Hanford site, north of Richland and West Richland, WA.

I'm really not arguing the ontology of the nicknames (which I've never heard), but merely noting the common naming that was then pretty well-known by virtually all the grade-school kids in the Tri-Shitties area.

... and, thus, into the Columbia. The vitrification plant has been a Bechtel boondoggle, with cost overruns, safety violations, and engineering fraud ... and DOE still gives 'em their contract "bonus" of $22 million ... this, despite a current budget ballooned to $10 billion from the $4 billion 'estimated' in 2000. The corruption is obscene. Needless to say, it's a "target rich" environment for GAP, and they're not even getting the tip of the iceberg.

WWII for "Fatman" to become the accepted reference. I covered this in the Master's thesis I wrote in the early '90s. I will try to find the footnote.

Here it is:

133 Rosenberg, "U.S. Nuclear Stockpile" p. 28, p. 26, Table 1; historian Michael S. Sherry in Preparing for the Next War, calls the bombs "Fat Boy and Thin Man" at p. 190, Feis, Japan Subdued, calls them "Fat Boy" and "Lean Boy" or "Thin Boy" pp. 60, 110; it apparently takes awhile for these things to get settled.

Edited on Sat Jul-22-06 08:33 PM by Spider Jerusalem
George Washington - planter; surveyor; colonel of militia during the French and Indian War; commanding general of the Continental Army during the American Revolution; first President of the United States

The Potomac/Delaware River - The Continental Army unger Washington crossed the Delaware River on Christmas night, 1776, to engage British forces in the Battle of Trenton. The Potomac forms part of the natural boundary between Virginia and Maryland, and the Army of Northern Virginia under Robert E. Lee crossed the Potomac in 1863 in their invasion of the North that culminated in the Battle of Gettysburg.

1066 - Wiliam the Bastard, Duke of Normandy, invaded England, defeated the English King Harold at the Battle of Hastings, and had himself crowned king by right of conquest; 1066 marks the end of the Anglo-Saxon era in English history and the beginning of the Norman/Angevin era.

Paul Revere - Boston silversmith who famously rode to warn colonists of the approach of British troops.

"Remember the Maine" - the battleship USS Maine exploded in the harbour of Havana at a time of high tension between the United States and the Spanish Empire; public sentiment blamed the explosion on Spanish treachery, and yellow journalists like William Randolph Hearst and politicians like Theodore Roosevelt made 'Remember the Maine' their rallying cry and te Maine's destruction the casus belli for the Spanish-American War.

Corregidor - island in the Philippines; fell to the Japanese early in 1942, liberated by American forces under MacArthur in 1945.

Gen McArthur - either Arthur MacArthur (Civil War officer, Medal of Honour winner) or his son, Douglas (also a Medal of Honour winner; youngest general officer in the AEF during WWI; Army Chief of Staff, 1929-1932; commandant of West Point; governor of the Philippines; Supreme Allied Commander in the Pacific Theatre of Operations during WWII; postwar governor of Japan).

Fatboy - the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki, Japan.

Antietum - The Battle of Antietam (or Sharpsburg) in 1862 was the bloodiest one-day battle fought on American soil; there were over 12000 casualties, IIRC.

Abe Lincoln - attorney; US Representative from Illinois; sixteenth President of the United States; led the country (or part of it, anyway) through the Civil War. (note that I don't say he 'freed the slaves' because he didn't; he can be said to have saved the Union.)

Julius Caesar - Romanconsul and general; the Roman Senate, under Pompey, feared Caesar's growing influence and ordered him to disband his army. Refusing to do so, Caesar led his troops across the river Rubicon, which sparked a civil war and led to the end of the Roman Republic.

JFK - Congressman, then Senator, from Massachusetts; hardline anti-Communist and supporter of Tailgunner Joe McCarthy; cigar smoker; lecher extraordinaire; thirty-fifth President of the US, did a few things for civil rights and probably saved the world from nuclear war before he was assassinated in 1963.

FDR - the greatest American president.

Ho Chi Minh - guerilla leader against the Japanese in Indochina during WWII; then against the French colonial government; then against the US and the Western-backed state of South Vietnam.

Golda Meir - First (and only )female prime minister of Israel; led Israel during the 1973 Arab-Israeli War.

November 11 - Armistice ending hostilities in the First World War signed in 1918. Also, Kurt Vonnegut's birthday.

June 14 - 'Flag Day' holiday in the US to commemorate the adoption of the 'stars and stripes' design by Congress in, I think, 1777.

Gen. Custer - youngest general officer in the US Army during the Civil War, received a brevet (temporary) promotion to brigadier general at age 23; cocky, overconfident, and far too lucky military officer who served with some distinction in the Civil War, and afterwards led the US Seventh Cavalry on the Great Plains, conducting raids against native tribes (as for instance the massacre along the Washita River in 1868) and led the Seventh Cavalry to destruction at the Little Big Horn in 1876, where he, and most of his men, were overrun by a vastly superior force and slaughtered.

USSR - Communist state formed after the victory of the Bolsheviks in the 1917 Russina Revolution; country that won WWII by killing more Germans than anyone else; the 'Evil Empire' for 45 years of Cold War with the West

Eisenhower - Supreme Allied Commander in the European THeatre durig WWII; 34th US President.

Nixon - Congressman, Vice President, President, crook.

Egypt - Pharaohs, pyramids, Cleopatra, the Battle of the Nile during thwe Napoleonic Wars, Anwar el-Sadat

Martin Luther King - Baptist minister and civil rights leader; Birmingham bus boycott, march on Washington, assassinated in 1968.

Thomas Jefferson - renaissance man; author of the US Declaration of Independence from Britain; ambassador to France; governor of Virginia; third President of the US; founder of the University of Virginia; bought Louisiana from the French and financed the Lewis and Clark expedition.

including the bit about gonorrhea, which was in JFK's medical records, which were only released a few years ago. I admire Kennedy's accomplishments, but I also recognise that he was very much human (which it sounds like you havge a problem with).

Show me an idol who DOESN'T have feet of clay; MLK cheated on Coretta, FDR cheated on Eleanor, Bill cheated on Hillary. Doesn't mean that they aren't great men. (But then I don't subscribe to bourgeois morality, either.)

54. Most of my learning is NOT from school... (answers)
I don't retain much of my school knowledge, and it usually isn't foremost in my mind... I'm 22, so... I've always been weird about learning that way (or maybe normal?)

George Washington.....................................

Hero, Patriot, General, first president, etc etc. Chopped down the cherry tree. Didn't want to be president. They wanted to make him King, but he turned it down (not from school obviously.)

The Potomac/Delaware River.........................

George crossed it. It was something of a gambit or a surprise attack, the war wasn't going well.

1066...........................................................

William the conquerer invades england.

Paul Revere.................................................

Rode many miles yelling out his warnings, did some other stuff too.

"Remember the Maine".................................

Yellow journalism, wasn't really true (maybe? nobody really knew) US wanted a war with a world power to show its strength as a nascent power. Spain, as a declining power was a good choice, and we always had the monroe doctrine to fall back on for excuses.

Corregidor....................................................

Dunno.

Gen McArthur..............................................

Something about the phillipines.

Fatboy........................................................

A nuke, the other being tall man. They were ones dropped on hiroshima and nagasaki. I think fatboy was the first.

Antietum.....................................................

Civil war battleground, I think it was a pivotal battle.

Abe Lincoln.................................................

Depressed, brilliant, possibly gay. Log cabin. Killed by booth. Awesome president.

Julius Caesar...............................................

I think he was supposed to be part of a triumvirate ruling rome, but he took caesarship instead. His name became Czar. Killed by brutus & co on the ides of march.

JFK............................................................

Killed by the cia/right wing through that guy and possibly others. (It's not who or how many, but WHY?) Took responsibility for bay of pigs, a failed rightist plot. Stared down the russians over the cuban missiles (we also had missiles in Turkey which we agreed to get rid of.) Progressive, catholic, first catholic president. "Ask not what your country can do for you..."

FDR...........................................................

New deal. 4 terms in office (!) Court packing. Alphabet agencies. Polio. Might have used pearl harbor as a lure. Rescued america from the depression, with the help of wwII. Some bad, and lots and lots of goodness. Killed by the right wing (just kidding, it was the polio.)

Ho Chi Minh................................................

North Vietnamese communist leader guy. I think I learned that from M*A*S*H or Jeopardy or something. Wait, mash was Korea.

Golda Meir..................................................

Never heard of her.

November 11...............................................

Dunno.

June 14.......................................................

Also dunno.

Gen. Custer................................................

Idiot who got his whole regiment killed by indians.

USSR........................................................

United soviet socialist republic. Iron curtain, spies. Severe repression and governmental abuse. Dictatorship. Proxy wars with US.

Eisenhower................................................

General, President, who warned of the military industrial complex in his farewell speech.

Nixon.......................................................

I am not a crook (he was.) Fairly liberal by todays insane standards. Environmental stuff, vietnam ending/de-escalation.

Egypt.......................................................

Old old country. The nile flows south to north, although on that map on the wall that is down to up. Pyramids built with slave labor. Worshipped cats. Now a dump second world country or worse.

Martin Luther King......................................

Civil rights leader, assassinated by...?

Thomas Jefferson.......................................

Revolutionary, even by 1776 standards. Liberal. Favorite founding father. Not christian. "wall of separation" between church and state. Treaty of tripoly. Didn't like madison that much (or was it adams?) Library of congress was his personal library! Sex with his slaves... =/

Good job, overall. November 11th is Armistice Day (Veteran's Day)
It was on the 11 minute of 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month that they signed the armistice to end WWI. They waited two weeks for the poetically-pleasant repetition, and thousands died.

Golda Meir was a former PM of Israel. Watch the movie "Munich" for the Cliff's Notes.

MLK was allegedly killed by James Earl Ray, although none of the King family believe that (and neither do I).

55. Okay....there's a good number I don't know, but...
George Washington- American revolution leader, owned slaves

The Potomac/Delaware River- Where Native Americans lived until land was stolen from them. After thinking about it for a second, also where George Washington crossed and attacked Hessians. (sp?)

1066- Year of one of the Crusades? Not sure.

Paul Revere- "The British are Coming!" One of the Sons of Liberty in the Revolution.

"Remember the Maine"- Sparked war with Spain, accused of blowing up ship but the explosion may have been an accident.

Corregidor- Drawing a blank here.

Gen McArthur- Don't know.

Fatboy- What immediately comes to mind is the atom bomb, but I know that isn't it.

Antietum- One of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War.

Abe Lincoln- Freed the slaves.

Julius Caesar- Roman emperor, betrayed and assassinated

JFK - Civil rights advocate, assassinated by CIA.

FDR- New Deal, helping the poor.

Ho Chi Minh- I should know this but I don't. :dunce:

Golda Meir- I know it has something to do with Israel.

November 11- :dunce: Drawing a blank.

June 14- Want to say Bastille Day, but that was July 14.

Gen. Custer- Lost to Native Americans whose land he was trying to steal.

USSR- Soviet Russia, Cold War, Stalinist purges.

Eisenhower- Planned Bay of Pigs. Warned against military industrial complex, last decent Republican president.

Nixon- First thing that came to mind was lyrics of CSNY's "Ohio". Then Vietnam, of course, then Watergate.

Egypt- Slaves building pyramids. Then the 6-day war.

Martin Luther King- "I have a dream..." Racial equality, Montgomery boycott, assassination by the right.

Thomas Jefferson- Louisiana Purchase, Declaration of Independence.

68. OK…the first things that come to my old mind..and
...I am a history buff, mind you.

George Washington: leader of our revolutionary army, “Father of our country.”

The Potomac/Delaware River: The Potomac River was part of Washington mythology (throwing a dollar across the Potomac). He led his troops in a winter crossing of the Delaware in what may have been the turning point in the revolutionary war—the defeat of the Hessians mercenaries near Trenton, NJ (HA-HA…The History Channel just had on a series about this hehehe).

1066: Assuming this is a year, it would have to be the invasion (Norman???) of England (it was around that time period as I recall…other than that I am stuck).

Paul Revere: Silversmith, midnight ride to Concord (the British are coming, the British are coming!).

"Remember the Maine": A dubious reason to get into war with Spain.

Corregidor: ”I will return.”

Gen McArthur: See above

Fatboy: I think you are mistaken here. If you are referring to the name of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima was Little Boy. Fat Man was dropped on Nagasaki. Otherwise I think of Rush Limbaugh.

Antietum: Major battle in the Civil War….North took charge after this one as I recall.

Abe Lincoln: Emancipation Proclamation, Republican when they were progressive.

Julius Caesar: Et tu, Brute?

JFK: I was let out of school early and after I got home I saw Uncle Walter (Cronkite) crying on TV as well as my mother, great aunt and grandmother all sobbing.

FDR: The New Deal, Lend Lease, WWII, Eleanor.

Ho Chi Minh: Nationalistic leader of North Vietnam who wanted to reunite his nation.

Golda Meir: Former school teacher and leader of Israel in the 1970s. No nonsense and well respected as I recall.

November 11: Vet’s Day

June 14: No idea…D-day was on June 4th, but no idea about the 14th.

Gen. Custer: Genocidal madman

USSR: Soviet Union, duck and cover (I am that old LOL)

Eisenhower: last good Republican President who made the prophetic warning about the military-industrial establishment.

Nixon: Watergate, China, his enemies list and Grace Slick’s aborted attempt to put LSD into his punch (Grace was nuts…and I loved her for it LOL). Many, many of memories of Tricky Dick and so much comes to mind.

Egypt: Nassar and his Arab League (I am that old LOL)

Martin Luther King: “ I had a dream….,” the Selma march and the Loraine (SIC) Motel are the first thing that come to mind….so many searing memories of him it is hard.

Thomas Jefferson: Declaration of Independence (just one of many reasons the right hates him today).
:)

Other than that, a fairly easy quiz. Most of this stuff should really be on the test for graduating High School seniors.

My natural superioirity comes out regardless, though. ;)

Seriously, though, I think people just graduating from high school should be able to answer at least 60% of your questions.

And as far as animals sticking their tongues out: HAH! Take this! No photoshop needed! And looks remarkably like my own canine unit -- simple minded, good-natured, and fun to be around, unlike those nefarious faking felines:

89. In the spirit of free association ...

I won't bore people with offering responses to all these, but I wanted to include this.

Every time I hear the name Ho Chi Minh, the *first* thing that pops into my head is Robin Williams in _Good Morning, Vietnam_ imitating
the Munchkins from _The Wizard of Oz_:

"What's a demilitarized zone? Sounds like something out of 'The Wizard of OZ'.

"Oh, no, don't go in there". "Oh-we-oh. Ho Chi Minh.

Oh, look you've landed in Saigon. You're among the little people now.

"We represent the ARVN army. The ARVN army. Oh, no, follow the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Follow the Ho Chi Minh Trail.

"Oh, I'll get you my pretty!" Oh, my God, it's the wicked witch of the north. It's Hanoi Hanna! "Now, little G.I., you and your little 'tune-ooh' too.!"

95. A rightwinger takes the quiz.....
Edited on Sun Jul-23-06 12:42 AM by Minnesota_Lib
George Washington: Commie revolutionary who had no respect for authority.

The Potomac/Delaware River: The Potomac River was where liberal George Washington set the lefty standard of throwing money away. The Delaware River was the river he crossed (stealing boats from honest loyalists) so he could mount a cowardly terrorist assault on good Nazis…err, I mean Hessians.

1066: A number 20 times higher than anyone can possibly count.

Paul Revere: Another lefty who rebelled against authority. He should be shot. Anyone know his address so I can post it on the internet?

"Remember the Maine": What the gal I raped on November 11th said about my huge 3 incher.

Corregidor: is that on my Gameboy?

Gen McArthur: “Book ‘em, Danno.” I loved this guy on Five-0. He was great.

Fatboy: My hero. I listen every day.

Antietum: Not sure, but if it’s “Anti” anything good I am all for it.

Abe Lincoln: Traitor to the party. Freed the slaves just so they could vote liberal. Anyone know his address for my blog?

Julius Caesar: Huh? Julius? Some queer guy, right?

JFK: Stands for “Just Fucking Kidding.” Can’t fool me.

FDR: Tried to help the lazy poor during the depression and sided against the hard-working Nazis in the late 1930’s. Fucking punk-assed commie! Was a fucking weakling, wheelchair-bound twerp…not a real man.

Ho Chi Minh: Commie that wanted to play dominos or something. My brother told me that.

Golda Meir: Fucking Jew bitch…oh, wait…I forgot I'm supposed to pretend that I like Jews until they kill all the sand-niggers and bring on Armageddon. Then and only then can I go back to hating all these hell-bound, Christ-killing Jews again. Whoa, that was close.

November 11: I was no where near that bitch that day. She is a lying whore and how can you rape a whore?

June 14: I was asleep all day. Another lying bitch. They all lie!

Gen. Custer: American hero who was martyred trying to clean up the west for white Christian people.

USSR: Ahhhhh! Run! They are under my bed…they are everywhere!

Eisenhower: A commie anti-business punk who pretended to be a Republican. I’d ask for his address for my blog but I think he is too old to bother with.

Nixon: One second…have to slip this sock over my throbbing member…be back in a few…

Egypt: Terrorist nation since those Arabs took over.

Martin Luther King: Anti-American jerk that wasn’t happy with the fact that we freed his sorry ass from slavery, but wanted equal rights and freedom from oppression as well. Give an inch and they want to take a mile. Where was my baseball bat and a length of rope when I needed them?

Thomas Jefferson: Christian fundamentalist patriot who wanted this nation to be a theocracy…unless I am mistaken, in which case he is a total anti-American jerkwad whose addy will soon be listed on my blog.

...because my sister has a warped sense of humor. The first time I was to fly alone with her the night before we left she made me watch plane crash movies and that was the last one before we went to bed.

Her theory is, if we watch 'em before flying, we will have an idea what to expect and do, if we go down. LOL

Give me some men who are stout-hearted men
Who will fight for the right they adore.
Start me with ten, who are stout-hearted men
And I'll soon give you ten thousand more.

Oh! Shoulder to shoulder and bolder and bolder
They grow as they go to the fore!
Then there's nothing in the world can halt or mar a plan,
When stout-hearted men can stick together man to man!

it.

George Washington: Prevented a military coup by putting on his glasses, saying "Gentlemen, you must pardon me. I have grown gray in your service and now find my self growing blind."

Potomac: Reverting to swampland of a different kind.

1066: Hastings. Bill conquers.

Corregidor: MacArthur squirrels away, Wainwright gets to march the "Death March."

MacArthur: Successfully administered Japan, but then approached doing what Washington avoided and in so doing assured Truman's honored place in history.

Fat Boy: The second plutonium implosion bomb to detonate, this time over human beings in a city.

Antietam: McClellan finds all of Lee's plans in a cigar, and still blunders.

Abe Lincoln: Found a way to save a ravaged and divided country, suffered tremendously because of his predecessor's incompetence. We will need his equivalent to survive the worst period in our history since the Civil War.

Ho Chi Minh: Powerful anti-imperialist with brutal resolve to rid his country of foreign rule.

November 11: On the 11th minute on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, the most brutal war up until that time, a war as stupid as any war, ended. Promptly the people who won it bungled the peace to make sure that wars do what they always do: Assure more wars.

Gen Custer: Last in his class at West Point, proved to be a brilliant Calvary officer in the Civil War, serving under Sheridan. Tried to live by Sheridan's brutal military methods in Montana in a genocidal war, and, but working without Sheridan's smarts and in command all by himself, ended up as a famous loser.

USSR: Stalin. One need not say more than that.

Nixon: The most deliberately malign person to occupy the White House up until the creature living there now.

Egypt: A great, largely peaceful isolated civilization that lasted for a millennium without doing all that much in the way of war. A culture of art. A modern incarnation, with not much in common with the original, now occupies the same general geographical area.

Martin Luther King: An American of nearly unsurpassed rhetorical skill who brought the principles of non-violence to his country, at least internally. The forgotten principles have sadly disappeared from our cultural awareness.

Thomas Jefferson: A deeply flawed polymath who at least engineered the Louisiana Purchase, setting in motion the chain of events that would give Custer his shot.

111. Ok; here are the initial thoughts that appear in my head:
George Washington: First President, Revolutionary War, soldiers marching in snow.

The Potomac/Delaware River: Washington crossed it.

1066: Is that a year or the number of people, votes, or????

Paul Revere: silver

"Remember the Maine" Is "the Maine" a ship? I wonder what happened to it.

Corregidor: Is this "corridor" spelled wrong, or a spanish word, or?

Gen McArthur: Dead white male warmonger

Fatboy: Human capacity for cruelty

Antietum: A battle

Abe Lincoln: Tall guy, civil war, reading by candlelight, assasinated, Marfan syndrome

Julius Caesar: conqueror

JFK: shot, and my mommy cried.

FDR: new deal in a wheel chair

Ho Chi Minh: Trail. Leader possibly mischaracterized by U.S.

Golda Meir: zionist, Israeli Prime minister

November 11: Veteran's Day

June 14 Flag Day, or, as I like to call it, "Nationalism Day."

Gen. Custer: Bigoted killer of natives

USSR: Failed social experiment used to generate fear in generations of Americans

Eisenhower: Ike, a republican who makes many Democrats these days look good

Nixon: A smart president with an ethical disability. While I cheered his political demise, he looks great next to the republican presidents who came after him.

Egypt: Exploited by the British Empire, the nile, the desert, camels, and source of ancient cultural artifacts.

Martin Luther King: A christian I remember with respect, honor, and appreciation. I wish other christian leaders would study Ghandi before becoming leaders.

Thomas Jefferson: The founder and president who pointed out that religious institutions that use government to advance their religion undermine our civil rights.

123. Taking a shot
Edited on Sun Jul-23-06 03:18 PM by dmesg
George Washington..... American resistance leader and first President. Established the American precedent of relinquishing power, unusual for our Constitutional form

The Potomac/Delaware River.. Potomac divides VA from MD/DC (though actually DC owns the south bank of the Potomac for a few yards until the boundary channel) and the Delaware divides DE from NJ.

1066.................... William the Conqueror takes advantage of King Alfred's distraction due to Viking raids, and invades England, launching an era of war and land grabbing between England and France that lasts for 800 years and makes Israel/Palestine look like child's play

Paul Revere............. American silversmith and propagandist who is most famous for attempting to warn Sam Adams to hide himself and his weapons stash when British troops began a raid. He failed in this effort and was arrested by the British; Adams was warned by his friend Dawes.

"Remember the Maine".... We LIHOP'd an explosion on one of our ships and invaded Cuba and the Philippines.

Corregidor.............. McArthur's HQ during the Philippines campaign. An island of extreme strategic importance, but I don't remember why. Something about where it is.

Gen McArthur............ Effective but jackass general in WWII who could not hold the Philippines but could retake them later. Then got into a pissing contest with Truman.

Fatboy.................. Makes me think of "fat man" and "little boy", the two original nuclear devices. Also "fatboy slim"

Antietum................ Antietam (thus) is a creek that runs through Sharpsburg, MD. The Battle of Sharpsburg (also called the Battle of Antietam) was fought there in 1862. It was one of the first Union victories in the American Civil War. After the battle, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclomation

Abe Lincoln............. First GOP President; former whig and free-soiler. Led country through the Civil War; assassinated.

Julius Caesar........... Gaius Julius "Caesar", Roman political figure whose leadership essentially converted the Roman Republic to the Roman Empire. He and two others ran the country for a while, and he was murdered by Senators who were worried he had too much power. After a ghastly civil war following his death, his nephew Octavian takes power as Augustus.

JFK..................... Son of a booze- and gunrunner millionaire, charismatic leader who was assassinated before he did the sort of stupid things most Presidents end up doing, and so he's idolized. Worked on the Civil Rights act (which was done under Johnson) and getting NASA to go to the moon (which happened under Nixon).

FDR..................... President of the US for most of the 1930's and 1940's. Guided country through Great Depression and WWII. Essentially ended the populist movement. Created the New Deal.

Ho Chi Minh............. Vietnamese communist and nationalist leader. Attended the peace talkes at Versailles after WWI hoping for a fair shake for Indochina; instead was snubbed and had to work as a porter. Successfully pressured the US out of South Vietnam 50 years later.

Golda Meir.............. Israeli Prime Minister from sometime after the 6-day-war to some time after the Yom Kippur war. She led Israel during a time of increasing doubt and worry as incidents like the Olympic massacre and the Yom Kippur war chipped away at the Israeli feeling of military superiority.

November 11............. Veteran's day in the US, Armistice day in Europe. 1 day after the Marine Corps birthday.

June 14................. Flag day, and birthday of the US Army
Gen. Custer............. Young general in the civil war whose audacious tactics won him fame. Later killed after those same tactics proved remarkably ineffective against a more mobile scattered enemy, the Lakota.

USSR.................... The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, a "Soviet" or "council" of a group of socialist republics organized around the largest member, the Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic. From 1946-1990, the chief rival of the USA worldwide.

Eisenhower.............. Bland but non-stupid President for most of the 1950's

Nixon................... Eisenhower's veep and President from 1969 until he resigned in '74. Created the EPA, the NEA, and several other government programs now associated with the political left. A foreign policy "realist", he antagonized both the left and the "new right" by pursuing detente while escalating bombings in southeast asia.

Egypt................... A country that is in both the middle east and africa, with mostly Arab population but some berbers. Roughtly 3/4 muslim and 1/4 Christian. Run by Hosnei Mubarak, but it's not clear he can hold on to it much longer.

Martin Luther King...... Father of the great civil rights leader, Martin Luther King, Jr.

Thomas Jefferson........ Author of the Declaration of Independence and 3rd President of the US

EDIT: typo under Ho Chi Minh

you're right...I think in sound bites, & even have written ad copy on occasion. I also like to write dialogue and often remember what people say verbatim. Both parents are/were in writing and PR occupations. Dad is Jingle King of the family. It comes naturally. I'm surprized it comes out in this little quiz tho. Thanx for your comment.:)

This quiz does give insights into one's communication style/psychology. I've enjoyed reading them.

142. Here goes
1) First president of the US; general who led the Continental Army during the American revolution; gained his military skill during the French and Indian Wars

2) Washington crossed the Delaware to attack the hessian garrison at trenton, one of the major victories during the American revolution (although could be construed as primarily symbolic)

3) Battle of Hastings; Norman conquerors take over England.

4)Paul Revere; Boston silversmith who alerted Massachusett militia that british troops were arriving to quell the rebellion; Lexington and Concord battles

5)Battle cry for the American side during the Spanish American War of 1898, referring to the somewhat dubious sinking of the Maine by Spanish forces, fueled by the so-called yellow journalism, particularly of Hearst press organs.

6)Corregidor - American forces surrender to Japanese, giving up the Phillipines at the beginning of the American-Japanese War in the Pacific Theater (1941-1942)

7)General in charge of defending the Phillipines against the Japanese, utters "I will return" at the American surrender of the islands, and does return, etc. Accepts surrender of Japan in August 1945. Makes kooky statements about invading and/or nuking China during the Korean War, is cashiered by Truman, becomes darling of the American right wing, amkes loony speech about old soldiers in front of a joint session of Congress.

8)Name of one of the atomic bombs used on Japan at the end of WWII

9)AntietAm - Creek running through Sharpsburg, Maryland, site of vicious 1862 battle between the Army of Northern Virginia led by Robert Lee and the Army of the Potomac led by George McClellan. Largely considered a draw, it saw some of the bloodiest fighting of the American civil war. (It was actually a strategic victory for the union)

10)16th President, blah blah blah civil war, etc,. too eays.

11) Roman statesman and general, much intrigue, seized power of the Roman Republic in 42 BCE, assassinated by rivals 44 BCE

12) JFK - President of the US 1961-1963, assassinated in Dallas Texas November 22, 1963.

13) US President 1933 - 1945; largely credited with devising the so-called New Deal social programs as a response to the Great Depression, led US during most of WWII

14) Leader of Vietnamese independence movement, worked with US OSS agents during WWII, became leader of Vietnamese resistance struggle and declared independence from French colonial rule, 1945; fought French forces in Indochina, 1945-1954; became leader of DRV 1954, continued resistance to Western colonial control of Vietnam until his death in 1969

15)Female prime minister of Israel late 60's -1970's.

16)Veteran's Day, so declared because it was the day of the general armistice that ended the First World War.

17) Flag Day (God knows why)

18) Fought at Gettysburg but best known for tear-assing around Souix Country killing any Indian he found, for which he got his just desserts at Little Big Horn, 1875.

...I'm bored...

just how similar our collective memories are about a variety of people/events/etc.. It's been a hoot reading through all of them.. Even my non-DUer husband enjoyed and was amazed.. (I printed out the questions and then the thread so he could see the others' answers)..

Nothing heavy or scientific..just something to lighten the mood for a few minutes :hi:
