people don't click on a post in which the entire message is contained in the subject line.

63. When the site was first established the message box had to contain materia
or you could not post. You could not just leave it blank. The program wouldn't allow that. I believe that is how it got started. People felt what they said in the subject line was enough but had to write something in the message box anyway or couldn't post.

P.S. I'm sure I'll be corrected.

52. It was originally meant to be analogous with gene
But in the cultural or mental sphere. The notion, which I think is credited to Dawkins, is that a powerful idea can be like a gene. Just as a successful gene perpetuates itself from body to body, a successful meme perpetuates itself from mind to mind.

It has come to have an additional meaning I think, often with a propaganda sense to it - "right wingers are pushing the meme that Democrats are all atheists" for example.

that, unfortunately, you might encounter on this board.

fullproof = foolproof
leagle = legal
dumby = dummy
weary = wary
hard-haired = hard-headed
genitalman = gentleman
acceptional = exceptional
I could care less = I couldn't care less

And my favourite DU quote: "The US has the higest Gun fatality rate on the Planet and it all because of "the right to bare arms"."
