Republican Filibuster of Abe Fortas was successful, wasn't it? |
|
This was during the Johnson Administration.
Johnson withdrew the nomination.
What, then, was the followup? Was someone else nominated in Fortas' stead? What happened?

2. Fortas was already on the court, if I remember correctly |
|
the filibuster had to do w/ elevating him to the Chief Justice's seat from Associate Justice.
Ultimately, it's how we wound up with that hateful old bastard that Nixon nominated for Chief Justice, whose name mercifully escapes me. Oh, yeah: Berger.

3. IIRC Fortas lacked majority support in the Senate |
|
making the filibuster a moot point.
IIRC he was filibustered in an attempt to keep the vacancy open long enough for Nixon to get in the WH.
