Bill Clinton, Barbara Boxer try to give Lieberman some JOEmentum!
By Neil Vigdor
Staff Writer

Published July 23 2006

With public opinion polls showing him trailing challenger Ned Lamont for the first time among likely Democratic primary voters, U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman is calling on some of his party's heaviest hitters.

Former President Clinton and U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., will stump for him at separate events tomorrow in Stamford, Norwalk and Waterbury, which analysts said could help change the dynamics of the race.

"That could certainly be the difference," said Stuart Rothenberg, author of the biweekly Rothenberg Political Report and columnist for the Capitol Hill newspaper Roll Call. "I think that's the A-team in terms of trying to get Democratic voters to vote for Lieberman. They both credential Joe Lieberman among Democrats. The subtext there is that it's OK for Democrats to support Lieberman."...

Both Democratic candidates will be in Waterbury tomorrow, with Lieberman joining Clinton for a rally at the Palace Theater and Lamont meeting with supporters at a local restaurant. Boxer, popular with liberals and women's groups, will campaign with Lieberman early tomorrow at a candy store in South Norwalk and at a fundraiser at a Stamford resident's home.

3. Maybe having Clinton campaign for Lieberman will have an unexpected

consequence. Lots of republicans still unreasonably vilify Clinton and do the opposite of whatever he recommends to this day. So . . . maybe if Lieberman loses the primary and runs as an independent, he will lose the crossover republican votes in the general election the way he will lose democratic votes by his "Judas' kiss" of *. After all, politics and otherwise, you are known by the company you keep.

4. You may be onto something there. Clinton, Boxer may be
the party's way of "helping" where it would rather not help.

5. That makes sense
They know Joe is going down. By campaigning for him now, they can ask him later to drop from the general election. I think this is a ood way for the party heavyweights to get out of this situation. They probably will tell Joe - we campaigned for you, you lost, get over it and drop out for the good of the party...

7. Clinton campaigning for Joe
is a little like McCain campaigning for Chimpy. I have never understood how you can throw your arms around someone who in the past stabbed you in the back. Oh well.
