1. Did you intentionally make this really hard?
...Or do I just know nothing about Canadian history?

3. Answers
The Plains of Abraham - 1759; British forces under Wolfe defeated the French under Montcalm (both commanders were killed, IIRC) - the British victory here eventually led to French cessation of Quebec in the 1763 Treaty of Paris

Sir John A. MacDonald - First Prime Minister.

1755 - um. Was that when they kicked out the Acadians? Something like that.

Manifest Destiny - silly Americans thought Canada would be better off as part of the US -

Sir Wilfred Laurier...........

Dieppe - one of the more spectacular military blunders of WWII, right up there with Monty going 'a bridge too far' at Arnhem; Canadian troops under British command attacked the French port of Dieppe, and most of them got killed in the process.

Two Solitudes.................

The Quiet Revolution..........

Louis Riel....................

Vimy Ridge - WWI battle in which troops of the Canadian Expeditionary Force won a notable victory against the Germans

Lester B. Pearson.............

Tommy Douglas - Prime Minister responsible for nationalised healthcare in Canada, and Donald Sutherland's father-in-law.

Upper/Lower Canada............

Ralph Klein...................

Sea to Sky Highway............

Bright Red Soil...............

P.O.G.G.......................

R.C.M.P - the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Afraid I know a good deal more of US and British history than Canadian, hence all the non-answers...

5. Well done!
The only one that you missed was Tommy Douglas - He was responsible for creating universal medicare for his home province of Saskatchewan... but he was never Prime Minister. Lester B. Pearson was responsible for nationalizing it among many other notable achievements.

And the Sutherland reference is correct too :)

Also - when we had our "Greatest Canadian" thingie - Tommy Douglas won. THAT is how important universal medicare is to us.

10. hahah - it's a reference to...
Prince Edward Island.

You mention red soil to anyone and they'll mention either Prince Edward Island or refer to it by it's original French name: Ile St. Jean.

But that question isn't fair... it's more geography than history..

Oh - ask him about

Meech Lake

and

Oka.

See what he says.

13. Wrong! lol
Meech Lake is in Gatineau Quebec and was the site of a failed consitutional accord in 1990 that was meant to bring Quebec into Confederation. It was an example of how back room dealing is not how constitutional politics should be done. It also exposed Brian Mulroney for the idiot he was IMHO. Quebec STILL hasn't signed on to the Constitution Act 1982...

OKA - also in the summer of 1990 was the site of a Native/Quebec Police/Canadian Army standoff that ignited a country... This crisis highlighted the need to address the rights of First Nations Peoples.

Here's an unforgettable image from OKA:

More about it in Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oka_standoff

As far as P.O.G.G. is concerned, that stands for Peace, Order and Good Government, a constitutional maxim which is often contrasted with the American Life, Liberty and the Security of the Person... but that comparison is simplistic.

More on it in Wiki:

17. I can do this one a lot quicker than the last, lol!
The Plains of Abraham : Something biblical?

Sir John A. MacDonald : This name rings a bell but I'm not associating it with anything.

1755: huh?

Manifest Destiny: March to empire. Might makes right. Take what you want even if it doesn't belong to you; you are more deserving than everyone else in the world.

Sir Wilfred Laurier: huh?

Dieppe: huh?

Two Solitudes: huh?

The Quiet Revolution: huh?

Louis Riel: huh?

Vimy Ridge: huh?

Lester B. Pearson: huh?

Tommy Douglas: huh?

Upper/Lower Canada: Yup, it's up there, and you can probably draw a line and call the top part upper and the bottom part lower.

Ralph Klein: First male/male reproduction: A Ralph Lauren/Calvin Klein hybrid clone.

Sea to Sky Highway: huh?

Bright Red Soil: Utah, iron, many desert places

P.O.G.G: People on Green Grass?

R.C.M.P: Royal Canadian Mounted Police

But then I'm from Manitoba, where our soil is more of a dusky grey-red.

23. OK, an attempt from Britain
Edited on Mon Jul-24-06 05:31 AM by muriel_volestrangler
The Plains of Abraham: Close to Quebec, I think, though I thought it was the Heights of Abraham from which General Wolfe captured Quebec in the 7 Years' War (American and Indian War to the USA, I think)

Sir John A. MacDonald: Early PM?

1755: Start of 7 Years' War?

Manifest Destiny: don't know - I would have said this was USA

Sir Wilfred Laurier: another PM - turn of 20th century, perhaps?

Dieppe: Disasterous attempt to land Canadian troops at the heavily forified port in WW2. Whose idea it was, I don't know, but I hope the British didn't pressure the Canadians into it, because it was never going to work.

Two Solitudes: don't know

The Quiet Revolution: don't know

Louis Riel: don't know

Vimy Ridge: WW1 trench warfare battle with a large Canadian involvement, and inevitably large casualties. I don't know who 'won'.

Lester B. Pearson: PM, just before WW2? Toronto Airport named after him.

Tommy Douglas: Politician who founded Canadian healthcare system (thanks DU, I wouldn't have known that without you).

Upper/Lower Canada: Old names (used by the French, and then the English?) for Ontario and the province of Quebec (though the boundaries probably weren't exactly what they are today).

Ralph Klein: Premier of Alberta, I think - right wing.

Sea to Sky Highway: BC road.

Bright Red Soil: don't know

P.O.G.G: don't know

R.C.M.P.: Mounties, spiffy red uniform, getting their man, chorus in Lumberjack Song, etc.

Bonus questions:

Oka: Don't know

Meech Lake: recent constiutional agreement about the status of Quebec - what forms the current status, I think.
