Israel must have seen the Untouchables -- "That's the Chicago Way!"
Edited on Sun Jul-23-06 10:22 AM by Armstead
Anyone remember that classic scene from the movie The Untouchables in which Seanb Connery as a tough old cop is telling Kevin Costner as Elliot Ness how to fight.

It came to mind in light of present events in the Middle East.

Connery;s speech was sort of stirring in the context of that movie. But it's a disaster in terms of foreign policy and matters of war in this day and age:

Malone: And *then* what are you prepared to do? If you open the can on these worms you must be prepared to go all the way because they're not gonna give up the fight until one of you is dead.

Ness: How do you do it then?

Malone: You wanna know how you do it? Here's how, they pull a knife, you pull a gun. He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue. That's the Chicago way, and that's how you get Capone! Now do you want to do that? Are you ready to do that?

Ness: I have sworn to capture this man with all legal powers at my disposal and I will do so.

Malone: Well, the Lord hates a coward. Do you know what a blood oath is, Mr. Ness?

Ness: Yes.

Malone: Good, 'cause you just took one.

3. PM: IDF acting with no restraints
Olmert says during cabinet meeting, ‘army has all the time, flexibility to carry out its mission in Lebanon’; adds: there is a possibility that the population that cooperates with Hizbullah will get hurt, although they are not on our target list

<snip>

"Prime Minister Ehud Olmert stressed in a cabinet meeting Sunday that "the IDF has all the time and the flexibility to carry out its mission. The army's operations are being carried out with no restraints."

<snip>

"Commenting on the civilian casualties in the fighting, the PM stated that "there is a possibility that the population that cooperates with Hizbullah will get hurt, although they are not on our target list. They are just more exposed to the strikes. This is a confrontation which obliges us to be cautious in the air and on the ground, and this is how we operate."

"We offer our utmost support to the IDF. It has the necessary freedom of action. Even in the midst of a diplomatic process, our fire power will not be jeopardized," Olmert vowed, and told the ministers that "every decision is being weighed and we execute the tasks with the required caution and precision."

6. The Concept Hardly Originated There, Sir
That is how fighting and war has always been conducted.

"If you're in a fair fight, you fucked up bad."

7. That doesn't excuse it
They call the deliberate killing of civilians terrorism.

I'm not sure I understand the distinction between that and nations that deliberatly kill civilians and call it "collatoral damage." Either way the civilians are just as innocent and just as dead.
