TEN Democratic Senators Voted for MORE Global Warming.
Edited on Sun Jul-23-06 12:31 PM by Clarkie1
We are suffering under the biggest heat-wave in recorded history in California. Yesterday in my mailbox I received a letter addressed from John McCain. Normally, I would toss such a letter, but it said something about global warming and an organization called Environmental Defense.

It was a fundraising letter for Environmental Defence, which is lobbying for the McCain-Lieberman Climate Stewardship Act, which was defeated by a vote of 43-55 in 2003. According to McCain, it is going to come up for a vote again in the near future, although he does not say when. The letter asked me to sign petitions to my senators to support the measure. Now, I'm in California, so I really don't think there is any concern about my senators supporting the bill. However, it got me curious who the Democrats were you voted nay last time around, and who the the Republicans were that voted yay.

Republicans who voted yay :-):

Chafee
Collins
Gregg
Lugar
McCain
Snowe

Independents who voted yay ;-)

Jeffords

Democrats who voted nay :-(

Baucus
Breaux
Byrd
Conrad
Dorgan
Landrieu
Levin
Lincoln
Miller
Pryor

Absent Democrats :-(

Edwards
Nelson

Note that there are 10 Dems who voted against. If these Dems had voted yay, the total would have been 53-45. If the two absent Dems had bothered to show up for possibly the biggest issue facing the future of the planet, the voted would have been 55-45. So, getting this act passed "next time" is very doable. Please pressure your senators if they did not vote yay on this to do so, and thank the ones who did. If we get a Dem majority in 06', and get all Dems on board on this, we could make the vote filibuster proof.

1. A view of the political landscape
Just as a comparison, these are my lowest ten senators in the Democratic caucus.

Leiberman (Connecticut)........ 43 *
Carper (Deleware).............. 38 *
Baucus (Montana)............... 36 *
Johnson (South Dakota)......... 33 *
Lincoln (Arkansas)............. 29 *
Pryor (Arkansas)............... 26 *
Nelson (Florida)............... 24 *
Salazar (Colorado)............. 24 *
Landrieu (Louisianna).......... 19 *
Nelson (Nebraska).............. 5 *

I'm getting very tired of seeing Nelson, Landrieu, Pryor, and Lincoln voting against every Democratic principle that comes before them. If we win Congress back, these Democrats will make sure that reversing the BushCo legacy will be a difficult slog.

I appreciate the optimism, but the Democrats will not all get on board for this save by means of a major pro-corporate compromise. They simply do not have a history of doing so....as long as these bottom feeders are allowed to remain in their seats, the Democratic caucus is smaller than it appears.

The true make-up of the Senate ideologically is 65 Conservative - 35 moderate/liberal. This is a major hurdle to any sweeping environmental legislation, and helps explain why we are so far behind the rest of the world on this issue.

But I'll do my part...if for any other reason than to just have the right to complain when others drag their feet.
