BASRA, Iraq - Eight Iraqi border policemen have been detained by Iranian forces after a clash on the southern river frontier in which one Iraqi was wounded, the regional border force commander said om Tuesday.

The clash on the Shatt Al-Arab river, 45 kilometers (27 miles) south of Basra, occurred Saturday when Iraqi border guards boarded a barge smuggling fuel to Iran, Brigadier-General Abbas Mussawi told AFP.

Iranian speedboats then arrived on the scene and opened fire, wounding one Iraqi guard. The entire Iraqi patrol, including an officer, was then detained and taken across the border to Iran, Mussawi said.
