At least two dead in sweltering Calif. heat, officials say
By JORDAN ROBERTSON, Associated Press Writer

Sunday, July 23, 2006

(07-23) 15:08 PDT San Francisco (AP) --

Sweltering heat was being blamed Sunday for at least two deaths in Northern California, including a resident at a nursing home who died after the facility's air conditioning system failed.

Triple-digit temperatures covered much of the Southwest, and in California, the power grid manager warned the state might declare an emergency for the second-straight day due to soaring electricity use.

Excessive heat warnings were in effect through parts of Southern California, where temperatures were expected to reach 99 degrees in downtown Los Angeles and 115 degrees in nearby Woodland Hills, where the mercury hit a record-setting 119 degrees Saturday.

No relief was expected until at least midweek, as weather conditions conspired to bake California's normally cool coast for the third day in a row and bring Midwest-style humidity into the usually arid Central Valley.

In Stockton, crews evacuated more than 100 patients early Sunday from the Beverly Healthcare Center after the nursing home's air conditioning gave out and two patients were hospitalized with heat-related stress, said police spokesman Pete Smith.

2. Thanks for sharing this, Kadie...
...I heard briefly there were some deaths, but missed the details on the news last night. Hope you are staying cool! :hi:

I'm trying to do my part to not use as much electricity during peak hours. I've only got the ceiling fan going... I hope the convalescent homes try to keep their residents hydrated, tought I know--but I hope.

3. We have 117 degrees 17 miles NE of Sacramento CA
ALL air-conditioner are sold out everywhere. Right now I have a fan blowing on my back and my feet in a tub of cold water. The temperature inside the house is 95 degrees.

4. Cold water is your friend.
Try soaking a hand towel in cold water, wringing it out and draping it around your neck. It helps.

I have central A/C and we only use it to keep the temp at 80 degrees indoors. It's been running almost non stop for two days.

It's 112 here officially, but on our ridge we tend to be a few degrees warmer than the official temp. I'd guess where closer to 115,not that it matters at this heat level.

6. Here in the B. Area,I have my AC set to 79, and its been 80, in the house
Its been running non stop since 10 this morning. Outside temp is 108.
My wife and I just came back from dinner at Elephant Bar. That place was packed and hotter than hell. I ask the manager about the AC, and he said that its just too hot for the AC to keep up...plus being packed didn't help either.

I've been to Rocklin. Nice area.

I am south of Sacramento. We got up to 112 in the shade in our back yard today. It is currently 107. We are lucky and have ac.

Take care and stay cool best you can.

14. Thanks, Kadie. I think we'll have above 100 degree the whole week
We'll check for air-conditioners every day. Hopefully, some place around here will get get them back in stock.

5. Believe it or not
drink something hot eg. tea. The hot liquid will kick-start your body's own air-conditioning (for lack of a better term) system and you'll feel better. If you look at those who live in Egypt, Iran, Syria, etc. -- anyplace that has heat as a daily constant -- you'll always see them drinking hot tea. Just thought I'd share. :-)

8. My own experience says this is true!
I've been drinking tea all week. Just be sure not to have TOO much tea or coffee. Try to balance it also with lots of water.

11. Great idea--
thanks so much for the tip... I tried some yin-yang balancing earlier, by taking a hot shower. I'll take it a step further by drinking some hot tea.

Thanks again! :hi:

15. And not water
poured over a ton of ice. Just room temperature water. That way, you're body doesn't have to work overtime to synthesize (for lack of a better word ... it's still early for me) the water into your body. You get hydrated quicker.
