WASHINGTON -- President Bush called the latest American winner of the Tour de France, Floyd Landis, on Sunday afternoon to congratulate him and invite him to the White House.

"Must feel great," Bush told the cyclist, who rode with an injured hip. "Everybody's proud of you. You showed amazing strength and courage."

Landis plans to undergo surgery this fall on the arthritic right hip, injured in a 2003 crash, and said he hoped he would be able to compete in the race again next year.

Landis picked up where another American left off last year, when Lance Armstrong completed his seventh and final Tour triumph. With the victory, Landis becomes the third American -- joining Armstrong and three-time winner Greg LeMond -- to win the Tour.
