My Dad died today.
I don't know where to post this but I wanted you to know that my dad passed away.

A veteren of World War II, he served in the Navy. He married my mom in 1951 and they just passed fifty-five years together last week. He was never a complainer, he was the hardest worker ever and he set an example for his four kids and numerous grand and great grandchildren that will never fade.

My dad was a dem to the bone. He was a union man who paid the price over and over in the past for his convictions. He forget more about honor than most people will ever know. He let black women sit on buses in Portland during the thirties and forties when it could mean a fist fight. He never flinched from the courage of his convictions, from defending anyone in pain or trouble, gay, black, poor. He was the finest man I ever knew. I don't know how to live with the emptiness in my life. He was the first and best man in my life.

Go home and hug your parents. Make peace with them. Take care of them when they're frail and make their passing more bearable. I am lonely tonight for Alan M. Bishop, my father, my hero, my friend.

and I will heed your advice. My dad and I do not always see eye to eye on politics in particular, but he's getting on up there in age, and I think I'll work harder to let those issues go.

Your dad was a fine man, and I am sorry for your loss. Sending blessings your way.

14. tears for you tonight, my heart goes out to you
Wrote this poem, about our secret place inside, our place of peace,
but I dedicate it to you tonight,

Take Me To Your Beautiful

Someday you’ll take me to your beautiful
And show me all the colors there
Someday you’ll take me to your plentiful
And show me time I’ve always had to spare
Someday you’ll take me to your peacefulness
And show me joy in quiet care
I need to feel your spiritual
Where we’ll climb upon your knowledge stair
Lead me to your wonderful
And show me how to dance without a single care
Fly me to your gloryness
Where music plays itself in air
Sing to me collective passions
The Choir freed from all despair
Let me live my life in comprehensiveness
Happiness my gift from prayer
Shine a light within my beautiful
And show me every color there

I lost my dad a year ago. It's very difficult losing parents. You know they can't live forever, but you never want to deal with the reality of it either. I can relate. Your Dad sounds like he could have been a clone of my Dad, who passed almost 6 yrs. ago. Your loss is immediate, and intense, but the memories will linger on. No one can take that away from you. If only I had DU then, as I do now, it would have helped to know so many people out there cared, without even knowing our loved ones. Your tender, loving words of your Dad are a tribute to him. Thank you for allowing us to share in your loss, and hope we can be of some comfort. My prayers for strength and comfort for you and your family in your time of sorrow. :grouphug: DC

52. He raised a good child
A friend and I were discussing once what the best way was to change the world for the better. We talked about this activism and that action, but he finally said what I have since believed is the stone truth.

"The best way to change the world is to raise children right."

Your father changed the world for the better, and you are the proof.

Be well, accept my sincerest prayers for your healing and strength, and continue to be that change he forged with his blood and sweat and love and wisdom.

I'm so sorry for your loss, but I am thrilled to think of the experiences and wisdom you have gained. He lived long and strong. Do the same.

67. I am sorry for your loss.
The loss of a parent is always hard. I am moved by your writing, "I don't know how to live with the emptiness in my life." It reminds me of when my father died. I used to read the lines by Aeschylus that RFK used when his brother was killed:

"God, whose law it is that he who learns must suffer. And even in our deep sleep pain that cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart, and in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom to us by the awful grace of God."

72. He really earned your respect. So sorry you have lost him.
From what you've written, it would seem he was completely uncommon.

You are lucky that he was the one who watched over you and cared so well for you and for others. His absense must seem intense.

Best hope for a complete recovery, in time.

Your advice in the last paragraph is sound and worthy. I still miss my wonderful Dad almost 17 years after his death. I didn't really appreciate him fully until after he was gone which is my fault and my loss.

Dear RV,

My deepest sympathies for you!!!

My dad died when I was 12 yrs old. You're so lucky to have had him for this long. My mom was diagnosed with Breast Cancer (she's fine now and clean for 2 yrs of cancer) so I can really relate to going home and giving a parent a hug. The Greeks have a saying that "time is a healer". Make sure you're taking care of yourself too. This is a VERY VERY DIFFICULT TIME for you.

128. As long as you carry these memories of him
and share them with others, he remains an inspiration. Bless you and yours as you grieve for this wonderful man. The pain will ease in a few years. I still cry over my Mom's death of over 20 years ago. I think of her daily, and we were not as close as you and your Father were.

There is an empty feeling when your parents die, and you are then worrying about how to ease your own death for your loved ones. Of course, this can't be done. They will suffer as much when you go. You are so right. Love as much as you can, whenever you can.

He sounds so wonderful. I hope you share stories and memories of him even more in your journal. I would love to read them.

Peace, friend.

138. If you want to honor him, follow his example.
I lost my father about fifteen years ago, my mother this spring. In all honesty, they weren't quite the sterling examples your father was, in terms of politics. However, I took the positive values they did represent - honor, determination, self-reliance - and apply them to my own political beliefs. In that way I honor them and all they gave me.

Take the good your father did and continue it. Teach it to your children if you have any, or better yet, teach it to other people your age by your example. Follow those principles and pass them on. In that way, your father will always be with you.

155. What a great legacy he left you...
I feel the same about my Dad.

He called himself a good old boy redneck and for many people that's negative term depicting conservative values, but for me it's not. My Dad helped take care of a guy I went to high school with who was gay and had aids. Whenever he heard a derogatory comment about him, my Dad stood up for him to anyone. My Dad was a caring and giving man who believed in giving people second chances. He taught me to do the right thing and to always stand up for what you believe. He wasn't a very big man, but he was the strongest and bravest man I ever knew.

I know how you feel. I love my Dad and miss him very much. The hole left behind is huge, but what we were given by our dads is a legacy we can pass on to our children.

My condolences to you and to your family for your loss.

I am so sorry for the loss of your father. I've learned that the loss of a parent is something you never truly "get over" but in time, you can look back on your memories of him and smile, remember funny and endearing things he did and said, and feel a sense of warmth and connection to him. I know it's impossible to imagine that right now, and it may take years to really get there. I wish you comfort in this very devastating and sad time.

I am so sorry for your loss, but I thank your dad for giving us a wonderful, compassionate person like you before he left. I am sorry to tell you that you will never get over it, but you will learn to live with it.

Hey guys, I'm just signing up to send roguevalley my condolences on the passing of his father. I'm from "another" site that usually doesn't agree with you guys, but thats not my intent on making an account. I have a father that I love dearly, and have a couple friends who have lost theirs. Its obvious that you loved your father very much, and that he was a good man. May he rest in piece, and my condolences to you and your family.

Mods, please don't delete this post. Lock my account if you wish, I am not here to "stir the pot" at all nor discuss politics. I am simply sending my condolences to a fellow human being. Thanks.

Bobby
