She's a "Redneck" Woman That I Adore.

At sixteen I was picking cotton with my Mama and Daddy. I kept that pick sack because it reminds me of the value of a dollar and the value of an education. An education that took me 13 years of working full-time days and going to night school. I worked hard to earn four college degrees including a Ph.D. I spent my life working in education to help others like me have a chance to succeed.

As State Auditor I worked just as hard uncovering fraud and abuse. Newspapers throughout the state praised me for protecting taxpayer’s money and cutting waste in government.

Now I’m running for the Public Service Commission because Alabamians need a strong advocate fighting for them. I’ll be on YOUR side. I’ll be fighting to see that your gas prices don’t go up 200 – 300%. I’ll be working for you.

During the past year we have seen that the people must be protected--especially those among us who are working hard everyday to make ends meet. I know what it’s like to make the trailer payment, the truck payment, and not have enough left over to pay the utility bill. I’ve lived in a trailer with no underpinning that was impossible to keep warm because the only source of heat was a space heater.

I know what it’s like today for my eighty-eight-year-old mother-in-law, Emma, whose only income is her $811 Social Security check. She doesn’t have enough to pay high utility bills and buy the medications she must have every month. Luckily, she has four children who have all been successful when she needs help. But thousands of our elderly citizens on fixed incomes do not. They have no one to help. I want to help.

I know what it’s like for my niece, Lisa and her husband Dwane and my two precious grandnieces, Shelbi and Jessi. Dwane had cancer a few years ago and Lisa lost her job due to a corporate merger. Since Dwane worked for himself in a lawn care business they depended on Lisa’s job for health insurance. Lisa is now driving a school bus which doesn’t pay nearly as much but at least covers medical insurance. She is also attending college at night finishing her degree. You better believe when I’m on the PSC, I’ll remember Lisa, Dwane, Shelbi and Jessi.

I know what’s like for our friend, Joe, who’s disabled. He lives alone in a drafty, old rundown house. Back in January when we visited Joe, he was huddled in one room trying to keep warm. He said, “I’ll be so glad when winter is over. I hope I make it till spring. I don’t know what I would do without my electric blanket.” You can bet your bottom dollar when I’m sitting on that commission, I’ll remember Joe.



Paul and I were not blessed to have children of our own to fight for. But I have Emma, Lisa, Dwane, Shelbi, Jessi and Joe. I want to fight to make sure they get a fair shake. And I want to fight to make sure YOU get a fair shake. If you give me your vote, I promise I’ll fight for you. I’ll always be honest and shoot you straight.
