Poll question: Would you pledge allegiance to Captain Crunch for $50,000?
Its been a couple of weeks, so most of us have probably forgotten that scary "Terrorist Ring" apprehended in Florida a while back -- you know, the "Liberty Seven" who were approached by an FBI agent to be recruited into al-Quaeda. If I'm understanding the story correctly, these guys (who fed homeless people and had trouble paying their electric bills) tentatively agreed to help al-Quaeda in a vague "sure" way if someone gave them fifty grand.

Without intending to impugn anyone's patriotism, I now put forth this question:

Would *YOU* pledge allegiance to Captain Crunch (of breakfast cereal fame) in return for fifty thousand dollars, and a vague promise to help him take over the world sometime in the future?

And, as a follow-up question, would *YOU* join the Republican Party *FOR REAL* for the same amount of money?

8. Well, technically it's Cap'n Crunch
But I don't see a problem with aligning myself with either for 50Gs. If I joined the Republicans, I at least could write in Scott Baio during the Republican primary, then vote for whoever I wanted in the rigged election.

would be one thing -

"a vague promise to help him take over the world sometime in the future?" doesn't sound like a good idea - esp. if it's like a contract where you are getting paid - the people might expect you to hold up your side of the "agreement". IOW - one should expect consequences.

12. The actual oath.
I <state your name> do solumnly swear (or affirm) to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic, and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States, and those of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice, so help me God.

It's pretty specific. You follow orders faithfully, but only within the law. First and foremost, your allegience is to the Constitution, which is the embodiment of the American way of life. The problem begins when the President, whose orders you swore to uphold, becomes an enemy of the Constitution, the defense of which is the very reason you wear the uniform of America's armed forces. Which part of your oath do you break, or do you merely declare that what the President wants to help you do is against the law, and therefore not covered by your oath? Are you prepared to spend some time in Leavenworth (or worse) to back up your assertion that you are not obligated to help the President break the law?

14. Raisin Bran was good enough for my grandfather, it's good enough for me.
Just kidding. There's always some knee-jerk reactionary who pledges blind adherence to whatever he grew up with, no matter what.

(Actually, I'm not sure Raisin Bran is that old anyway. :()
