“I am so sorry,” [Karen Hughes] said, sitting at a bar drinking wine.
During a refueling stop in Shannon, Ireland, Ms. Rice’s aides ran into a tired and angry group of Americans who had been evacuated from Lebanon and were trying to get home, but their plane, which stopped in Shannon, had broken down.

Some of the Americans recognized Karen Hughes, the assistant secretary of state for public diplomacy. Within minutes she was surrounded by the group, who said they had been traveling for five days and had been at the airport for 24 hours.

“I am so sorry,” she said, sitting at a bar drinking wine.

2. How typical. This administration never has any answers, only excuses
and fake apologies. An apology from anyone is rare.

Worse leadership would be hard to find.

46. That's "compassionate conservatism" for ya.
No, really. I wish I still had the news article where one of Karen Hughes' buddies admitted as much to the press. The paraphrased version is, "we acknowledge the suffering you will experience as a result of our action/inaction, but we're not going to do anything about it."

I guess Karen practices what she preaches.

3. "assistant secretary of state for public diplomacy"
my arse.

What a joke. The woman leaves the Bush admin to spend more time with her son. Guess she got sick of him pretty quick, made a call to Bush, got hired back on in a new and ridiculously redundant position.

She probably gets paid a HEFTY SUM for doing JACK Q SQUAT.

Must be nice.

25. They will be going into overdrive profiteering mode.
The corporate cabal knows we will boot them into the street soon. They will increase the rate of stealing due to the imminent end of their crime spree. Expect to see a resurgence of "missile defense" projects, the greatest scam against the US taxpayers of all time.
Hughes got on the payroll just to fly around and pad her bank account. Drinking wine in Shannon waiting to go somewhere else and do the same thing. Disgusting thievery but the really disgusting thing is that these crooks still have 30+% support!

in Iraq or something. To sell American Iraq policy in the Middle East? Remember she talked to all those women's groups and they basicly told her to go home? It didn't go very well and then, you don't hear anything.

Maybe her family doesn't want to spend more time with her?

The Washington Wire, the blog of the Wall Street Journal is reporting today the Karen Hughes, public diplomacy chief of the State Department, was surrounded in an airport bar by Lebanese Americans who had been evacuated from Lebanon.

Despite traveling 5 days, members of the group could not stay in a hotel because of a disagreement with the State Department over who would bear the lodging costs.

32. This definitely calls for a bar joke.
A slight little guy is having a drink in a bar. A lot of drinks. A very dark bar.

He leans over to the big woman next to him and says, "Do you wanna hear a funny blonde joke?"

The big woman replies, "Well, before you tell that joke, you should know something. I'm blonde, and six feet tall, 210 lb. and I'm a professional triathlete and bodybuilder. The blonde woman sitting next to me is 6'2" and 220; she's an ex-professional wrestler. Next to her is a blonde who's 6'5", weighs 250 lb., and she's a professional kickboxer. We're three big, bad blondes! Now, do you still want to tell that blonde joke?"

The guy blinks and swallows, thinks about it a second and says, "Heck no! Not if I'm going to have to explain it three times.

52. NEW LINKS!
How it used to be:

http://www.tnr.com/blog/theplank?pid=26650

(The same as above)

and how it was re-written, after a WH call, obviously, in a later incarnation:

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/07/25/world/middleeast/25rice.html

The complaints began even before she arrived in Beirut. During a refueling stop in Shannon, Ireland, an under secretary of state, Karen Hughes, along with other administration officials and a few reporters were sitting at a bar when a group of Lebanese-Americans recognized Ms. Hughes and approached her.

They said the plane American officials had put them on to return home had broken down on the runway in Shannon. They said they had been at the airport for more than 24 hours and had been traveling for five days without showers, and eating airport food. They said they were exhausted.

“I’m so sorry,” Ms. Hughes said, and promised to try to help. Within a few minutes a United States Embassy official, who was at the airport to look after Ms. Rice’s plane, was dispatched to find the Lebanese-Americans hotel rooms.
