Why is the media calling Condi's Beirut visit a "surprise"

I swear, I've heard this idiotic meme reported about a half-dozen times today on the radio: "Condileeza Rice makes a surprise visit to Beirut today."

I knew she was going. YOU knew she was going. Our own President, his mouth stuffed with food and barely able to get the words out, told us she was going at the G8 Conference, so why is this a "surprise"?

Is she going to do a pole dance there or something? Why is this such a "surprise"?

I really need to know.

Late last week, the scuttlebutt was that Dr. Rice wouldn't be allowed to land anywhere but in Israel, and the fact that she was able to go to Beirut was the surprise.

i think she was planning just on going to israel and then to Italy from there, I think. She must have heard George Mitchell and Zbignew Brisensky (sp?) on Larry King last night and probably thought she wasn't going to let herself get upstaged by them and probably changed her mind, and probably arrangements were made while she was enroute. little good it will do if she insists on not calling for a cease fire that is not going to hold.
