It Is So Sad To See How...
Edited on Mon Jul-24-06 12:22 PM by DistressedAmerican
the government of a country born out of terrible ethnic oppression readily turns to open oppression of others.:-(

I will never understand that.

2. There is, of course, a great deal of outrage within Israel about...
...their current conservative government's actions. It's the reason I reject the Goldhagen hypothesis. However, the rising alliance of ultra-orthodox Revisionist Zionism and it's spreading influence over even the legal system in that country is very disturbing.

4. Definitely A Lot Of Opposition Within The Country.
There was a great thread recently on a big peace rally in Tel Aviv. Always got to be careful to separate the people of Israel from the government. I sure as hell would not want the blame for Bush's actions which I oppose. Sure they have the same issue in spades right now.

6. Bad leadership and brainwashing people through violence and fear.
That's what I think it is.

Except for a few countries in Europe and a few in latin America which recently were elected, government leaders are given power by economic interests and they keep their power through those same interests.

Very few people in the world are served by their government. They in fact are serving the interests of the wealthy and powerful.

sometimes turn into abusers.

8. I actually think it is a kind of hyper-vigilance born out of the WWII

experience. An extreme sensitivity to potential threats.

Quite understandable under the circumstances. But, certainly with the potential to over-reaction.

For example, when I hear the Prez of Iran talk about wiping Israel off of the map, I find that little more than sabre rattling rhetoric that mainly plays out in small scale attacks by their surrogates. I do not envision the mushroom cloud. I know Iran would be also wiped off the map in response. There is a kind of deterent in place that makes it extremely unlikely.

However, as it is not impossible, those threats are seen as much more serious from the perspective the the Israeli leadership (and some of its people).

Understandable? Yes. Prone to overreaction? Yes. Good for overall peace right now? No.

9. No justice, no peace.

One injustice has a way of breeding another, and another. One has to wonder what Israel's going to do in another generation or so, when the Israeli-Palestinian population becomes the majority.

10. That is why they insist on a two state solution. If everybody could vote
the results would not bode well for the jews.
