ok, just wrote my representatives re: ABA and signing statements |
|
An American Bar Association task force issued a blistering report asserting that President Bush's use of signing statements ignores legislation passed by Congress, and undermines the rule of law and the constitutional system of separation of powers. The task force will recommend that Congress pass legislation providing for some sort of judicial review of the signing statements (possibly including the giving Congress the right to sue over the signing statements).
What is your position on the ABA's statement and recommendation? Do you really want the president to "pick and choose" from the laws that you pass? I realize that signing statements were used in previous administrations. However, the current administration has employed this approach to essentially ignore over 750 laws sent to him by congress (more than all of the previous administrations combined). This is made even more problematic by the secrecy in which this administration has acted and its willingness to misrepresent facts on topics including the threat from Iraq, our energy policy, and many areas of science.
As my representative in congress, I would greatly appreciate your thoughts on this matter. Please spare me any platitudes or broad sweeping statements, and instead explain to me whether you are in favor of the ABA's recommendations or the president's right to essentially ignore the will of congress. Please also explain to me how the policy that you support strengthens our state and our country.
Thank you for your service and your consideration of my inquiry.

It doesn't matter if anyone wants "their Prez" to have the ability. HE DOESN'T!
Article 1 of the constitution states that a President can sign a bill into law OR return it to Congress with his reasons why he disagrees with it. PERIOD! There are no other options!
I watched the press conference held by the ABA this morning, and they explained that.
My concern is that, even though the ABA has made all this public, no one will do anything!

This is the same ABA that the perverticons made a great show of swearing was the "Gold Standard" by which to judge the right wing ideologues they jammed into scotus chairs.
Watch the squirming that is sure to come. Hypocrisy train leaving on track nine, with No Mo Jo as conductor.
