I can just hear it now. They will be "proud" of the draft... finally we'll be teaching young Americans to support their country by having to serve at least a couple of years. After all, in Israel, every 18-year-old non-Arab citizen is mandated to provide three years of military service.
As though we were in a similar situation as Israel. Though that's part of the problem, these people see the world as uniformly hostile--even allies aren't to be trusted--after all, where where they when we wanted to invade and occupy IRAQ? Want more proof? Just listen to the rest of the world, they're all against us. Everything we do is criticized and obstructed at least to some degree by, literally, every other nation--except Israel. Nevermind that we, as a nation, are doing wrong and bad things and generally piss on other nations at every turn, not to mention bad-mouthing and complaining about them. We disregard their advice, refuse to join with them and generally don't play nice and somehow we're surprised when other countries aren't happy with us. If you figure that the neo-con-types are abusive with other nations and expect them to be hostile--and that results in other nations actually being hostile, it's rather a case of self-fulfilling prophecy.
Thinking the world is hostile, even though there is indeed some hostility out there, involves being fearful of the world. Add to that the traditionally strong degree of ignorance of the rest of the world, and the situation is becoming dangerous. Toss in one truly shocking "terrorist" attack resulting in a heretofore unimaginable catastrophy--and the country is there to be taken--wherever the controlling political power wants it to go. Anywhere. Normally, of course, our leaders wouldv'e had rational restraint or at least would've had to listen to both political parties--as they would be sharing power to some degree. Alas, owing to decades of insidious planning, one party, the party of insanity had taken majority control. Rather more than a little convenient that we had such a dramatic attack at just such a time, but sure enough, everything came together.
Naturally, they have to keep the fear and ignorance going. The ignorance is easy, they control the media and to some degree, ignorance is a longer term sort of thing--and requires schools to fail to teach what's really important as well as having the media create a "picture" of the rest of the world over a long time--shaping the public's perceptions and conclusions. The fear is even easier. Again they can create all the danger they want--it doesn't even have to be real; they control the media and the political agenda. If the people ever showed signs of not being afraid and all the seemingly scary stuff in the media wasn't inspiring enough fear--it's easy enough to let a terrorist attack happen. Now and then, they'll be successful on their own--so we'll see real tragedy, here, at home. That'll do it.
The funny thing here is that it's almost against the terrorist's best interests to succeed in attacking America--at least personally. We destroy whole countries pretending to go after them--their own countries, by the way. Of course, in a sense, they are succeeding in destroying America and the West--the America we've known and loved, making us become all the more militant, violent and dangerous. So, if harming us is more important to them than avoiding making their own situations far worse, then they're getting just what they want.
We can thank George Bush, Condoleeza Rice, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld and other neo-cons, cabinet members, powerful private citizen advisors and everyone else who's behind these people. We can also than the Republican Congress and their feeble Democratic opposition. In the end, though, we have to thank ourselves as a people for this. In the end, whether we had anything to do with the country's current direction, it's still up to us, the citizens of this country, to stop this madness. Alas, probably most people think we have no power, and in some ways it's true, but we have much more power than we realize--if we ever organized and acted in unison. Perhaps one day the situation will become difficult enough to actually reach the people who think all this is okay and cause them to rethink their beliefs... Such a thing would further improve the chances of the citizenry to both come together and take action. But what pain would be avoided if we could do it sooner rather than later. Alas.
