TALLAHASSEE -- When Randall Terry came to Tallahassee this week to file papers to run for the state Senate, he brought what might seem unlikely friends -- two write-in candidates for the same seat.
But Terry, who is trying to topple incumbent Sen. Jim King, wasn't creating more competition in the district that includes parts of Volusia and Flagler counties.
Instead, the write-in candidates were Terry supporters whose entrance into the race virtually guarantees that only Republican voters will get to decide who represents Senate District 8 for the next four years.
Terry, an anti-abortion activist who is trying to appeal to religious conservatives in the campaign, used a quirk in Florida's election laws to prevent Democrats and independents from voting in the Sept. 5 Republican primary.
