Local business passing on the costs of petroleum-related products
There's a local fruit & meat market where we shop. Today there was a new sign that said "due to increased cost of petroleum products (plastic bags), we cannot give the multiple-pound discount if you use separate bags." Basically, they give a discount if you get 3+ pounds of meat, and now customers who want those 3+ pounds in separate bags will no longer get the discount.

I thought it was very interesting to see a local business acknowledging the increased costs of petroleum products and passing along the charges to customers. I'm sure part of it is also to cut down on the pain-in-the-ass factor of people wanting separate bags, but interesting nonetheless. I wonder if it's a sign of more to come?

1. To all those who voted for Bush: Gas is now $3.09 in Cleveland, Ohio.
Next time be more careful who you throw your vote to.

All items are up in the grocery store, every single one. This is price gouging.

4. Is it possible for them to switch to paper bags?
I have always hated those plastic bags. I can find many uses and re-uses for paper. I don't know if that would be a complete solution, but recycled paper bags would be a start.

5. I don't know if that would work for meat
They're referring to the plastic bags they package meat in at the butcher counter. I think they would leak through plastic.

I also hate plastic grocery bags, though, and ask for paper bags when I remember.

Sure they would, all they need to do is pack the meat old school
Waxed, wrapped butchers' paper put into paper bags. That's what worked just fine up until twenty five years ago:shrug:

8. Oops...I guess I'm too young to remember that.
25 years ago, I was in grade school and didn't know much about how meat was packaged.

7. I don't know how
the prices of everything haven't already gone through the roof.

They're at the roof level, but not through the roof yet.

They should be. The costs of transport are incredible compared to what they used to be.

We have a farmer's market here at a park in the summer/fall. I haven't even checked them out, because last year their prices made no sense. I can't even imagine what a six pack of corn costs this year. Will I have to give up my first born daughter?

9. I work in construction, and we are passing along the cost as a "fuel
surcharge, as are our suppliers. Hill, meet shit.

10. not surprising.
first of all, most likely on their deliveries they are being charged a fuel surgcharge. Plus the cost of plastic is insane, because of the cost of oil. I work for a foodservice distributor and many companies that deliver to us have had to up their minimum order (like we have) or they'll just charge you a straight amount at the end of your invoice.
