One Big Step toward Belling the Cat |

It would seem the Republicans are in a rush to cobble together ethics. If they want to take a large step in accomplishing that, for them a gigantic step, they would reinstate the “Fairness Requirement.” That requirement was ended by Reagan. What the fairness requirement accomplished was leveling the economic playing field for a challenger, by requiring broadcast station be balanced and fair. There must equal coverage of all candidates, this included ads. The power of a large campaign war-chest was diminished by the fairness requirement.
Congress should rewrite and include the print media. They should also move to include validation of truth in attack ads. Any ad should be whole truth, not half truth, otherwise it would be considered propaganda and would require any media carrying to give equal space and time to the opposing candidate.
The purpose of this suggestion is to take the large bucks out of campaigns.
Oh, yes—maybe we could also require politicians to take a simple ethics and public service test, hell we even require hairdressers to be tested, before they cut hair.
