18. Does being gay mean you hate women?
Hmmm...that's a new one to me.
>>>snip
Aside from a 1986 foray into Kerrville politics, when he ran as a Republican candidate for justice-of-the-peace, previously Friedman has only danced on the edge of political life. He did this often in ironic and sometimes edgy Jewboy ditties such as "Ride 'Em Jewboy," a ballad about the holocaust, and in "Get Your Biscuits in the Oven and Your Buns in the Bed," a lament over women's liberation from the point-of-view of a chauvinistic boyfriend (a tune that, in a double-dose of irony, earned Friedman the National Organization for Women's 1974 "Male Chauvinist Pig of the Year" award)

Just in case you want to see the lyrics:
Kinky Friedman)
You uppity women I don’t understand
Why you gotta go and try to act like a man,
But before you make your weekly visit to the shrink
You’d better occupy the kitchen, liberate the sink.
Get your biscuits in the oven and your buns in the bed
That’s what I to my baby said,
Women’s liberation is a-going to your head,
Get your biscuits in the oven and your buns in the bed.
Early every morning you’re out on the street
Passing out pamphlets to everyone you meet.
You gave up your Maiden Form for Lent
And now the front of your dress has an air scoop vent.
Every single brakeman that’s ever come along
Had a little woman always tellin’ him that he’s wrong.
Eve said to Adam, “Here’s an apple you horse”
And Delilah defoliated Samson’s moss.
Get your biscuits in the oven and your buns in the bed
That’s what I to my baby said,
Women’s liberation is a-going to your head,
Get your biscuits in the oven and your buns in the bed.
Mean-hearted harpies are breaking all the laws
Tearing up their girdles and a-burning up their bras,
Now the air is dirty and the sex is clean
And your coffee makes my hair turn green.
So damn emancipated in your mind and your body,
Gonna have to cancel all your lessons in karate.
If you can’t love a male chauvinist
You’d better cross me off your shopping list.
Get your biscuits in the oven and your buns in the bed
That’s what I to my baby said,
Women’s liberation is a-going to your head,
Get your biscuits in the oven and your buns in the bed.

30. You know who I trust?
Chris Bell.

"But serving in Congress also gave Chris a chance to see firsthand the crippling effect of cynical partisanship. Honest debate was less common than partisan gamesmanship, genuine compromise was virtually unheard of, and the public interest consistently took a backseat to political interest. Chris became a prime target of the infamous 2003 Republican redistricting effort in the Texas Legislature, and he was defeated in his bid for reelection after his district was redrawn.

Not content to stand idly by and stomach the violation of laws and abuse of power that accompanied the redistricting effort, Chris filed a formal ethics complaint against House Majority Leader Tom DeLay in June, 2004, breaking a seven-year "ethics truce" in Congress. Four months later, the House Ethics Committee responded by unanimously admonishing DeLay on two of Chris's charges and leaving a third on the table pending a criminal investigation in Texas..."

11. Good news for Bell
I knew Texans would get serious the closer to election day:

Perry shows no gain since Jan., Bell in second
July 22, 2006

Republican Carole Strayhorn has fallen well into last place and dangerously close to single digits in the July Zogby International tracking poll for the Wall Street Journal. Rick Perry shows no change since January at 38.3%, followed by Democrat Chris Bell at 20.8% (up 2.9% since Jan.) and Kinky Friedman in third.

This poll confirms what weve been seeing out on the campaign trail for weeks now, said Bell campaign spokesman Jason Stanford. Texas Democrats are waking up to the fact that the way to beat Rick Perry is not with the lesser of two Republicans. Carole Strayhorns problem is not that people dont know who she is. Her problem is that Texans recognize a fast-talking, all-things-to-all-people con job when they see one. Shes turned from a character into a caricature, and thats not what Texans are looking for in their next Governor.

The Zogby/WSJ poll was taken July 11-19 and has a margin on error of +/- 3.7%. Chris Bells TV ad, Think Big, went on the air in markets across Texas on July 18...

:) HOWEVER after being burned badly a few too many times "trust" is something I sadly don't do lightly any more. Even my beloved husband, whom I trust more then anyone else in this world, only gets 99.9% of my trust.

Thank you for the info on Chris Bell though. He sounds like he'd be very good for Texas and I hope the voters there are smart enough to elect him. B-)

82. I was in Texas once when I was 5,
but my only memory is that I didn't bring my mom back the souvenir she requested. She wanted a Dallas Cowboy, I brought her a figurine. :D

I was there again for a professional conference shortly after 9/11, but never made it out of the hotel/mall in Houston. There were weird cow sculptures in the mall.

While I'd like to say I don't know anything about Texas politics, that's not correct. It's where GWB, along with some other governors in a few other states, hatched out state pilot versions of NCLB. As an educator, that's one I just won't forget. All in all, Texas is not on my list of places to retire to, lol. I'll never cast a vote there.

46. 1, 3, and 4 voted for Bush/Cheney 2004. Plus here's 10 problems with Kinky
Edited on Mon Jul-24-06 07:41 PM by Czolgosz
(1) he has run for office in the past as a Republican,

(2) he voted for Bush/Cheney in 2004,

(3) his interview with Ruminator magazine confirms that he supported Bush's Iraq war:

Question: So does this idea of the honorable cowboy have anything to do with why you threw your support behind President Bush in this last election? You did, didnt you?
Kinky: Yes. I did in this last election, but I didnt vote for him the first time.
Question: Who did you vote for in 2000?
Kinky: I voted for Gore then {NOTE: AS SHOWN BELOW, THIS IS A LIE}. I was conflicted. . .but I was not for Bush that time. Since then, though, weve become friends. And thats whats changed things.
Question: So its your friendship with him thats changed your mind about having him as president more than his specific political positions?
Kinky: Well, actually, I agree with most of his political positions overseas, his foreign policy. On domestic issues, Im more in line with the Democrats. I basically think he played a poor hand well after September 11. What hes been doing in the Near East and in the Middle East, hes handling that well, I think.

(4) his public voting records confirm he lied about voting for Gore in 2000 because he hadn't voted since 1994 when he voted for the first time in a decade to vote for Bush/Cheney in 2004,

(5) on the topic of immigration, Kinky has said that the immigration protesters were "half playing hooky," and "Mexico is not a poor country," and he told Bill O'Reilly "Good fences make good neighbors, and, Mr. Fox, help us build that fence," and he wants to outsource our border security to 5 Mexican generals,

(6) he wants to take time out of the school day for prayers in public schools and he wants to post the Ten Commandments in all public school classrooms,

(7) on the topic of women's reproductive rights, Kinky refused to say what his position was for the first year of his candidacy until he was called "evasive" by a CNN anchor, and while he now claims to be pro-choice, he will not say whether or not he favors repealing the Texas law that requires physicians to mislead women seeking reproductive counseling by giving medically contradicted information falsely suggesting a link between abortion and cervical cancer,

(8) Kinky's sworn testimony at Max Soffar's trial and his website give two completely contradictory view of Kinky's position on the death penalty,

(9) "Most analysts assume that if Friedman gets more than 10 percent, he could well guarantee a Perry victory, since those votes are probably coming from Bell or Strayhorn rather than from the governor," and

(10) he thinks "Negro is a charming word" (this you have to see to believe: http://youtube.com/watch?v=C9mXTxEQI3A).

50. Typo. Fixed it. Thanks. Here are 10 reasons to vote for Bell:
1. Bell is the only candidate who didn't vote for Bush/Cheney,

2. Bell is the only candidate who supports raising the minimum wage,

3. Bell is the only candidate who hasn't flip-flopped with regard to his political party,

4. Bell is the only candidate who hasn't been a cheerleader for Bush's Iraq foreign policy debacle,

5. Bell is the only candidate who did anything to bring down the DeLay empire of corruption,

6. Bell is the only candidate who would stop the practice where Texas actively misinforms women about their reproductive health,

7. Bell is the only candidate who has endorsed and voted for other Democrats over the past decade,

8. Bell is the only candidate who favors raising teacher pay $6,000 to bring Texas teacher pay up to the national average,

9. Bell is the only candidate who respects the First Amendment's separation of church and state, and

10. Bell is the only candidate who has successfully fought lobbyist abuses and the improper influence of undocumented political action committee money on public policy.

"Kinky is a lot more conservative than most people realize. He has a good campaign strategy. He's appealing to young adults and college students who think he's a liberal, which he clearly is not if you look at his stance on immigration, death penalty, prayer in school, and energy. The stupid college students think he's a hippie who's obviously a liberal and are throwing their support behind him without knowing better." by returnofthemack

"I have to imagine half his supporters in Austin would drop dead of shock if they read this interview on line here http://www.ruminator.com/content/040501.html . Here's the excerpt that would KILL those Austinistas: SM: So does this idea of the honorable cowboy have anything to do with why you threw your support behind President Bush in this last election? You did, didnt you? KF: Yes. I did in this last election, but I didnt vote for him the first time. SM: Who did you vote for in 2000? KF: I voted for Gore then. I was conflicted. . .but I was not for Bush that time. Since then, though, weve become friends. And thats whats changed things. SM: So its your friendship with him thats changed your mind about having him as president more than his specific political positions? KF: Well, actually, I agree with most of his political positions overseas, his foreign policy. On domestic issues, Im more in line with the Democrats. I basically think he played a poor hand well after September 11. What hes been doing in the Near East and in the Middle East, hes handling that well, I think. Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! (I'm just wondering: how many blame-American-first liberals in Kinky's campaign have read this interview?). One especially funny "bonus fact" about this interview is that Kinky was just pulling the interviewer's leg when Kinky said he voted for Gore in 2000 (no doubt trying to appear more "independent" in light of his support for Bush and his past run for office as a Republican). Kinky's voting records confirm he didn't vote for Gore (or anyone) in 2000." by NoTaxTexas

"I think more important than Kinky winning the election in 2006 is that Chris Bell (D) come in a distant third in Texas. And if Perry wins but sees any considerable drop in Republican voters, then maybe the politicians will wake up." by weegee

"We could do better than Kinky I'm sure but I am also certain that we could do worse. This is not an endorsement or even any committment from me. 83. Bell is the only Democrat in this race
Edited on Tue Jul-25-06 12:15 AM by Lithos
The other three are Republicans or RW Libertarians. Chris Bell is not only the only Democrat, he's also a damned fine progressive to boot. Others can give you the details, but I will guarantee you he's real and he needs your help.

For those that don't know Kinky, that cigar says it all - think Freud if you need the reference. He's an overcompensating ego-maniac, old fashioned chauvenistic bigoted (immigration) friend of Bush and Laura who even more shallower in ideas than Schwarzenegger. If you want someone to even lower what little standards are left for the office of Governor, then he's your man.

Carole (married to whoever this week) is the picture next to the definition of flip-flopper. She jumped the Democratic party in order to pursue her own career, jumped husbands and abandoned almost every elected office she's ever had in her bid to move upwards. There isn't an issue one she hasn't flopped on whenever the polls indicated otherwise. You want to know what kind of person she is? Look to her kids, Scottie who couldn't remember which lie he was telling cause he told so many and Mark who shammed his way thru school on his grandfather's coat-tails and is instrumental in the great sham known as Medicare reform. One of her husbands wrote a book slamming LBJ trying to bring up the old bigoted subtext for his support of the Great Society and civil rights. I can guarantee you the cross is for show.

Rick Perry of course is bought and paid for by the RW neo-fascists of the GOP.

87. Why?
Maybe some of us don't like Republicans or people who vote the Republican way. Look up Bell's voting record in Congress. Screams Republican. Not Democrat. And certainly not progressive. All the newspapers that endorsed Bell in the primary cited the same reason for the endorsement. "Will work well with the Republican legislature." Some of us would like to have someone who WILL NOT work well with the Republican legislature.

It just bugs the hell out of everyone that there are Democrats who will not support Bell simply because he is the Democratic candidate. Well, we won't.

Why do we like Kinky? For starters, take a look at his campaign finance reports. No special interests to be found.

Some of us are tired of the politicians saying they will promote the public interest and then represent the special interests. And there are lots of Democratic legislators in Texas who do just that. And many of those special interests are Republican interests.

Will he win? Probably not. Governor Goodhair will win. Poll after poll after poll show him ahead by a wide margin. There is no runoff. Plurality takes it all. He's got the plurality.

Would Kinky work well with the Republican legislature? Probably not. And probably wouldn't work well with a Democratic legislature either. There are quite a few Texans who gave up on both parties a long time ago. We want someone who isn't "tied in" as they say. Someone who is willing to pull out the pen and write "VETO" on legislation that Texans don't want. Legislation that was written solely for the benefit of the special interests.

There are many of us who believe the main problem with the Texas Democratic Party is the party itself. What we feel. We're entitled to feel that way. Maybe the current chair will change the way we feel. The previous two certainly didn't. The field director for Bell is who we wanted for chair. And he might have been had it not been for the interjection of homophobia on the part of some who said we couldn't have a gay man as chair of the Texas Democratic Party. Well, as Molly Ivins would say, why the hell not?

Molly Ivins supports Kinky Friedman. That right there is a good reason to support Kinky Friedman. Because Molly Ivins does. And she by the way came up with the slogan of "Why the Hell Not."

The element of the special interests is one reason why I don't know anyone who would even think about voting for Strayhorn. She was a Democrat. Then was a Republican. Now she's an "Independent." Independent is not taking lots of special interest money from both Republicans and Democrats.

Would the people supporting Kinky vote for Bell if Kinky were not running? Some would. I might. And I have no use for Bell personally. But if it were him or Perry the choice would be Bell.

The point everyone seems to overlook is that the majority of people supporting Kinky are what you call "disconnected" voters. They don't vote anymore. But plan to in November. But probably wouldn't if Kinky weren't running for governor.

The silver lining to Kinky Friedman is in those votes. Most will vote Democratic in the other races. So we may have more Democrats in the legislature after November. That's a bad thing?

The future of the Democratic Party in Texas is not in the governor's mansion. It is in the legislature. Something the DU Texas members seem to not understand.

Why was this poll started? Did you expect everyone to automatically vote for Bell? Or did you just want to flame the Kinky supporters? Flame away. Keep flaming away. And maybe in an upcoming column Molly Ivins will flame back.

Kinky is many things. But he's pretty much typical of Texas men. Republican and Democrat. Not perfect. But he admits it. He's a little touch of reality. Maybe not a "socially acceptable" or "politically correct" reality. But most Texas men aren't.

And that is just reality.

However, I did not start this poll. I am just an enthusiastic Bell fan.

I did look up Bell's voting record and I'm not hearing it scream Republican Looks more centrist to me, which in Texas might as well be liberal.

He voted No on the partial birth abortion B.S.

No on that bogus Healthy Forest Initiative

Yes on Condemning Iraq Abuse of Prisoners resolution

Yes on Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act

Yes on Student Loan Forgiveness for Teachers

Yes on HR 2350: To reauthorize the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) block grant rogram through fiscal year 2003, and for other purposes.

Yes on Ready to Teach Act of 2003 - A vote to pass a bill that would improve the quality of the teachers in every classroom by using grants to fund preparation, training, and recruitment programs for teachers.

Bell got a 100 percent from both NARAL and Planned Parenthood

67 percent from the Humane Society

100 percent from the American Library Association

90 percent from the N.A.A.C.P.

100 percent from the National Education Association

75 percent from the League of Conservation Voters

67 percent from the School Nutrition Association

100 percent from Peace Action

Well, I could go one but you can read it all here:

http://www.vote-smart.org/voting_category.php?can_id=MTX52661

PS:I wouldn't exactly call what Molly said an "endorsement". Here's what I found:

""The answer to that question is Molly Ivins' answer, 'Why the hell not?' I ran into her at the Texas Book Festival in November and told her I was running. She said, 'Why are you running?' And I said, 'Why the hell not?' She said, 'That's beautiful, that's your campaign slogan.'"

90. If you think of Kinky's candidacy like a political IQ test, you're failing
Edited on Tue Jul-25-06 10:29 PM by Czolgosz
If you want to support Kinky because you like his sophomoric music, fine.

If you want to support Kinky because you like his cliched books, fine.

Even if you want to support him because you think his "Negroes-in-prison" and "I'm not pro-choice, I'm pro-football" type jokes are funny, fine.

But when you claim that you support Kinky because you are a progressive, you only prove that you are an idiot or, at best, a child who ought not interrupt when adults are talking about important topics you don't understand.

You question Bell's votes? You say his votes "scream Republican" and "not progressive." Only an ill-informed loudmouth moron would suggest such nonsense.

Bell voting record earned a 100% rating by NARAL; he won't agree to any reproductive rights law that doesn't include an exception for a woman's health and he favors increasing stem-cell research. Bell also favors repeal of the Texas "misinformed consent" law that requires physicians to give women seeking reproductive counseling medically disproved information. Kinky, on the other hand, says he hasn't decided yet whether he favors this abomination of a law.

Bell voted against the Constitutional Amendment banning same-sex marriage. Kinky, on the other hand, makes a joke about how gays should be miserable, too, but he didn't bother to vote when this Constitutional Amendment was on the Texas ballot.

Bell's voting record earned a 100% rating by the NEA; he'll raise teacher salaries $6,000, decrease the overemphasis on the TACKS, and oppose vouchers. Kinky, on the other hand, wants to privatize physical education programs in public schools.

Bell's voting record scores a very low 8% from the Christian Coalition. Yet Kinky would post the Ten Commandments in every public school classroom and he wants to take time away from studies for school prayers.

Bell's voting record earned a 100% rating by APHA, indicating a pro-public health record.

Bell's voting record earned a 100% rating by SANE, indicating a pro-peace voting record.

Bell's voting record earned a 0% by the far-right-wing anti-immigrant group FAIR.

Rated has a 93% pro-labor rating by the AFL-CIO.

You are an idiot to question Bell's qualifications as a progressive while you support Republican Kinky.
