My Sister Died Yesterday

Michelle Ruth Gillen January 10, 1958- July 24, 2006. She was 48 years old and although this was sudden it was not unexpected. Micki as we called her had spent most of her life battling alcohol. She tried numerous times to kick the monkey but the disease is a progressive one and she never got in front of it. She was my closest sibling as we were only 13 months apart. She leaves behind two daughters ages 22 & 18.

life is fragile and sometimes no matter how much they are loved, people succumb to diseases of addiction and must leave prematurely for that beautiful place beyond. My mother smoked herself to death and there was not a thing anyone could do about it. I could see that she would die young from it when I was 12 years old. Help your sister's daughters understand that they could not prevent this.

I have to believe that the love and the connection goes on beyond death--having lost 3 family members who died too young, I couldn't stand it any other way--but that doesn't help much right now when you feel the raw pain of separation. Honor her memory. Keep her alive in your heart.

He died at 50 yrs of age, and was, without any doubt, the nicest man I ever knew. He died in 1991, and straight up New Year's Eve at midnight, I got that awful phone call. That first year after his death was absolutely the worst year of my life and have to admit the only thing that got me through it was Zoloft. I'm profoundly sorry for your loss, Binka, and if you start having anxiety attacks like I did, I urge you to get some help - you've had a very rough year.:hug:

I am truly sorry for your loss. This must be devestating, even if expected. (I can understand what you are going through myself. My Sister-in-law actually has a very destructive alcohol and drug problem. For the last five years, everyone in our immediate family has expected to hear the worst. She's ended up in the hospital due to overdoses and pancreatitus-- as a result of her addictions -- and the doctors have all warned that if she doesn't stop, she will die.) Despite that, when they lose the battle, I am sure that it is devestating.

My thoughts and prayers go to you, and I hope that you and your family are handling this as well as possible.

All day long I have been looking at a snapshot in my mind of when she and I were 6 & 7 and we are standing in front of our parents Plymouth Valiant wearing Yogi Bear masks. We were dressed in matching tops and pants, by then we were the same size (I ended up being 5 inches taller than her in the end even though she was older)and we were so happy. My family has several people in the military and I think I know what you mean.

Micki was very gifted in so many areas she lost sight of them. Ultimately this was a painful long drawn out suicide. She is no longer in pain. Today I saw a cloud in the sky that looked just like a giant angel. It was her I know it.
