Which Deity do I Plead and Sacrifice to for Peace?
Which religion or Deity do I plead to for world peace? It doesn't appear to be the God of Abraham, is it Buddha, or Krishna, or L. Ron Hubbard?

Does this Deity have a television show or address where I can donate? Is there a form of sacrifice that I might partake in to encourage and end to war and spread the gospel of peace?

They used to have a god for everything before monotheism, they had a god of war, a god of beauty and a god of fertility. Which god or goddess can I appeal to for a little peace?

1. If you want to find a religion that actually practices peace and
pacifism, the Quakers seem to have the best track record. :toast:

3. Since, as a species, we are little more than the chimpanzees we
are so closely related to, I would suggest that you pray to Cheetah, God of the Monkeys. Remember when you pray to shake your head vigorously from side to side while screaming through a smile. Hurling feces might also help.

May Cheetah bless you and give you many opportunities to demonstrate your dominance. Achimp (in lieu of 'amen')

6. "Hymn 43"

Oh father high in heaven -- smile down upon your son
whose busy with his money games -- his women and his gun.
Oh Jesus save me!
And the unsung Western hero killed an Indian or three
and made his name in Hollywood
to set the white man free.
Oh Jesus save me!
If Jesus saves -- well, He'd better save Himself
from the gory glory seekers who use His name in death.
Oh Jesus save me!
I saw him in the city and on the mountains of the moon --
His cross was rather bloody --
He could hardly roll His stone.
Oh Jesus save me!

9. I want a god that demands that we love our neighbor, respect each other,
care of the poor and needy, respect our elders, seek peace and justice, feed the hungry, visit the imprisoned....wait, wait, don't tell me.

10. Well, lets see...
The "god of Abraham" is allegedly behind the conflict in the first place, so no help there.

Buddha has moved beyond trivial illusions like "war," "peace" and "sacrifice," so he's probably not a good one to ask.

Krishna was an avatar of Vshnu, who is commonly seen as a deity of peace. But given growing sectarian violence in India, I'm inclined to say that his faction is on the out and doesn't have enough pull with the other gods to effect much difference.

L. Ron Hubbard... Don't go there.

If you are looking for a deity, you might consider Thor (also known as Tor, Thoner and Donner.) While he was definitely a god of battle, he is more "battle in the cause of stability," as distinct from Odin's "war for the sake of glorious war." In addition to his warrior attributes, Thor is a god of the hearth and home and was often invoked as a protector and defender against invaders, disease and storm.

14. Aphroditie was the Goddess of Love
Edited on Tue Jul-25-06 09:40 AM by shadowknows69
and you really just can't go wrong with love. Everything else should fall into place after that. Dionysis would get the whole world too plastered to make warfare. Two of my faves anyway.

21. Aphrodite is not a good choice
Edited on Tue Jul-25-06 10:56 AM by TechBear_Seattle
Aphrodite was the goddess of passion, not love (big difference.) She was married to Hephaestos, the god of artificial craft, and carried on a very long affair with Ares, the personification of battle frenzy and the madness of war. By all accounts, she was vain, selfish (even for a Greek deity) and cowardly. Remember, she is the one who started the Trojan War, and she was one of the reasons that war went on for more than 11 years.

I wouldn't expect much help from her :hi:

(Edited to change "Greed" to "Greek" Oops!)

23. Thanks for the clarification Tech
I was drawing on some fuzzy memories of 8th grade greek mythology on that one. I remember now her and Hephestus, who wasn't a bad God except that he made all the other God's weapons. Oops. I forgot about Ares too. Hey maybe good girls just liked the bad boys even on Mount Olympus. B-)

I think she'd want peace, and likely, Aphrodite would, too.

26. Athena.
She also was goddess of War. Though different from her brother, Ares, who fought for the sake of fighting, she was about strategy. She favored peace, before battle, but didn't shy away. The Greek goddess of peace is Eirene (modern day, Irene), also the Goddess of Spring.
