What can we learn from a 15 y/o peace activist?
Ava is the future's vision today. She is stating in an unfiltered way, where do we want our communities, country and world to be in ten years?

It's for this reason our campaign is proud to receive her US Senate endorsement and to have her produce our first campaign ad that emphasizes hope and not fear.

It may be previewed at www.carlsheeler.com. The netroots will redefine politics in the 21st century and levels the playing field for other than just wealthy patricians and those backed by corporate and special interests. We need your involvement. Together we can do it.

34. Yup, true non-violence in action, yeah?

:wtf:

Oh, yeah... must put the :sarcasm: on this...

sigh.....

It wasn't enough to struggle with vietnam, civil rights, women's rights, gay rights and all the other struggles we involved ourselves with for the sake of others and get derision from our elders at the time, but now we have to get bashed by the younger ones.

Yanno, I've been having a hard time saying, that at the age of 60 it's still worth giving so much of myself to all this crap in this society. If this is how we're going to be rewarded for our efforts, I think I'll just let the young ones take over, and see just how well they do at saving our country.

I give up. I'm saving these posts, because whenever I read here about how "we" aren't doing enough, I'm going to haul out these words about how we're "in the way", and let people start to figure out that this is part of the problem.

This is a perfect example of being our own worst enemies.

Have at it, young ones. Let's see what you can do.

32. Really? How so?
Yanno, I really don't understand these kinds of contentious posts. Is this truly showing an improvement in human relations???

I could certainly cite lots of negative examples from "whippersnappers", but does that really accomplish anything?

Does that in any way lead to increasing understanding?

Do we really need to get into an intergenerational war of words here?

Aren't there more important things to concentrate on?

11. I've said it before
But you've got my vote. And my mother, father and brother, too. So that's four in Warwick.I wish it wasn't such an uphill battle.

I also kind of wish you'd challenged Langevin instead. He needs to go. I refuse to cast a vote for him. I'm not voting in that race. I have a few issues that are my line in the sand. Women's reproductive freedom is one, as is this asinine war, and health coverage for all Americans. Keep up the good work. Are you going to run TV ads ckoser to primary time?

27. Baby boomer here, asking "Easier to do what?"
We (baby boomers) have struggled for civil rights... social & economic justice... peace. We've strived to make our world a better place. We believe in the beloved community. Then others came after us and started gentrifying our beloved community.

My fervent hope is that those now coming after us will pick up the struggle for civil rights... social & economic justice... peace... will strive to make our world a better place... will , once again, believe in the beloved community.

You see, we (baby boomers) will be "out of the way" soon enough... and our world will be yours. Please take care of it.

But I've been hurt before, and I'm still here... takes a lot to get rid of me ;), and believe me, I've gone through, and am still going through, a lot. But as long as I live & breathe, I'll stand up & speak out for what I believe in. I sincerely hope that the next generation will do the same. As I've said, Ava gives me hope.

42. Robert Fulghum on hurtful words...
Edited on Wed Jul-26-06 04:56 PM by Sapphire Blue
This is from his book, All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten...

In the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific some villagers practice a unique form of logging. If a tree is too large to be felled with an ax, the natives cut it down by yelling at it. (Can't lay my hands on the article, but I swear I read it.) Woodsmen with special powers creep up on a tree just at dawn and suddenly scream at it at the top of their lungs. They continue this for thirty days. The tree dies and falls over. The theory is that the hollering kills the spirit of the tree. According to the villagers, it always works.

Ah, those poor naive innocents. Such quaintly charming habits of the jungle. Screaming at trees, indeed. How primitive. Too bad they don't have the advantages of modern technology and the scientific mind.

Me? I yell at my wife. And yell at the telephone and the lawnmower. And yell at the TV and the newspaper and my children. I've even been known to shake my fist and yell at the sky at times.

(snip)

Don't know what good it does. Machines and things just sit there. Even kicking doesn't always help. As for people, well, the Solomon Islanders may have a point. Yelling at living things does tend to kill the spirit in them. Sticks and stones may break our bones, but words will break our hearts...

Yes, words will break our hearts

ANd, it's getting worse.

We know not what we do.

We used to study and counteract verbal violence.

Now it's considered clever.

Lord, help us all!!

44. Perhaps we all need to go back to kindergarten?
Perhaps we need to learn the important lessons all over again...

like some of the lessons from Robert Fulghum's All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten...

Share everything.

Play fair.

Don't hit people.

Put things back where you found them.

Clean up your own mess.

Don't take things that aren't yours.

Say you're sorry when you hurt somebody.

(snip)

And it is still true, no matter how old you are - when you go out into the world, it is best to hold hands and stick together.

I give you my hand, bobbolink. :pals:

35. yep and don't forget, a woman's right to a legal abortion
soon they might forget. Will they allow it?

We got sick of it and we as women rose up and fought for the right to choose. Now they want to take it away after this struggle.

I'm a late boomer (late 1950s) and I missed a lot of the intensity of the late 60s however I do remember watching JFK having his head blown off in Los Angeles. Even at that time, I was in the 6th grade I believe, I was interested in U.S. OUT OF VIETNAM and all of the rest of it.

Today I fight on. However, it seems almost hopeless at times when I see how very few care enough to VOTE. Yet they sure do complain a lot oh yes, and the game continues.
