There was a loud explosion at Dobbins Air Reserve Base
here in Marietta, GA just about 1/2 hour ago. I work directly across the street from Dobbins. I was outside smoking a cigarette and heard this loud boom. Have no idea what it was. I have to the local news Web sites and haven't seen anything about it.

1. Could have been an electrical transformer that blew
considering the high temperature that would be my guess.

6. I grew up near an air base in NM
and never heard one till I was about 21. I was inside and thought it was an explosion right outside my house--shook the walls and everything.

8. Sometimes, when the air was just right and full with humidity
sonic booms would happen when I lived in Florida...someone from just across town would say "Didya hear that sonic today?" Whereas I would say Nope. This happened vice verse as well.

All sonics are different in sound, depending on the wind, the air quality, topography, etc....this coming from a grown up who lived in the flight line of a major AF base during Vietnam.

Now my son, he does not even know what a sonic boom sounds like, and he is nearly 26 years old.

9. We get them frequently here
I swear they used to have f-16's going supersonic right over our city all the time. Mostly just the big cargo planes lately.

12. You live near water?
Those are the places where accidentals happen the most.

11. I think the mystery of the explosion is solved.

My co-worker just told me that the city is doing some construction blasting in the area. But it sure was scary when it seemed to come from the Air Reserve Base.
