A sure fire way to p*** off freep types

Last night, I went to a local establishment to have a couple of beers and play NTN trivia, which I love. There were a couple of very attractive young caucasian ladies sitting down at the end of the bar. Shortly, a young black man approached the ladies and did what young men have been doing since time began. The guy sitting next to me leaned over to me and muttered in my ear, "Look at that. That black sonofabitch hitting on those white girls." I replied, "Yeah. That one young lady seems to enjoy it." Then the guy said, "If she was my daughter I'd go over and kick his ass. I wouldn't want any n*****'s hitting on my daughter.". To which I just felt a need to say, "That's because you're an idiot. There's nothing wrong with those people. They're young and having fun. I would prefer if you don't use that racist shit around me."
He then offered loudly to "kick my ass" and I told him that while I am generally a pacifist, that he could take his best shot, only not in the bar because I'm a regular there and want to go back. The owner was there, heard him, and hustled him out the door. The guy was snarling by this time, and the young man in question asked if that was all about him. I said "Yeah, but I told him he's an idiot and I don't have time for his shit." Turns out that this young man who was talking to the ladies is an Ultimate Fighter (trains at a well known local gym) and also played football at a local college. It might have been fun to watch loudmouth try and take him on. Racism is alive and well, unfortunately, but just once, I want to see a racist idiot get his head handed to him by a guy like the ultimate fighter. Btw, I never once raised my voice to the freep clown. I'm sorta proud of that.

11. Hospital story

I work at a large urban hospital. We're a teaching hospital with lots of resident doctors of all ethnicities and nationalities.

We had an asshole patient who was a rich stockbroker from the suburbs around here. He had a bad accident and was horribly messed up. As soon as he was stable, they transferred him here because we have the biggest and best staffed facility with the most specialties. The minute he hit the inner city, he wanted out! All those brown and black folk, don't you know. And some of the residents and nurses probably weren't even from the US. Horrors! His wife even asked for bottled water for him to brush his teeth. I guess you can't drink the water here. The asshole didn't seem to realize he drank exactly the same water at home.

We fixed him up and sent him home and laughed our asses off at his ignorance.

10. I've been with my girlfriend for well over two years now, and it is

really stunning to see the change is how my family talks when I am around (she is black, my extended family is white conservative).

They used to say some of the most racist shit I have ever heard in my life, directed generally towards different groups.

But now I notice they never say anything when I'm around, whether she is there or not.


Not only are racists becoming more defensive about their racism ("I like some black/mexican people, I'm just saying that most of them _________"), but they are also too big of cowards to express their views to anyone who might expose their bigotry.


And they really hate being called on it.



I'm not suprised by your encouter, though.

People will say anything to you if you are white like them and they don't think there are any minorities in earshot, or if the think you don't have any connection to minorities.

I hate that conspiratorial tone that racists use. I was at a Dodger game with a co-worker (free tickets from work put us together). Out of absolutely no where he says, "That girl should be horse-whipped." I'm looking around, no clue who he is talking about. So he points, white girl, black guy. I'm still thinking "why? is she cheering the opposing team or what?" When it finally clicked, I'm thinking what century is this guy from? And then "why the hell does he think I would agree with him?!" I eventually told him people can date anyone they want to and they don't need his blessing.

As a Latina woman I sometimes encounter it though in my experience its more subtle. There was a girl at work who said ignorant stuff all the time and then when she'd catch herself because she realized a Hispanic or Black person was around she would try and make excuses. One time we were in a cubicle talking about stuff. There were about 4 of us in the cubicle. She starts going on about how Puerto Rican women are loud, they all have 5 kids by the time they are 20, blah, blah. Then....all of a sudden it hit her that I was there. So she says to me....."oh, but I don't mean YOU. YOU are a good person." So I looked directly at her and calmly said: Well, thank you. You think all my people are worthless but its really nice you make an exception for me." A good shot of sarcasm thrown in. As the days went by she kept trying to make excuses and the more she did the stupider she sounded. I finally told her "you know, if you have a problem being a racist that is something you need to deal with. Its not my problem." You know what the kicker is? She herself got pregnant when she was 17 by a Puerto Rican boyfriend she had at the time. Her daughter is half Puerto Rican!

19. Racism still does exist and is shocking!

A couple of years ago I was standing in line at the post office. A crusty old Southern white man complained of the poor quality of service. He said, "You know why? It's 'cause they got a black man heading up the place now."

Now I don't live in a bubble, but at the same time I was so shocked at this blatant display of racism I froze. Literally froze.

I now kick myself for my silence at that time. However, it certainly prepares me for the next time something like that happens. I will be silent no more.

I have always had the same response to that particular remark. "Why?" I've never gotten a coherent answer yet. A lot of babble, but when you get right down to it and ask them, "what specifically would bother you about your offspring dating someone of a different ethnicity" the answers tend to be extraordinarily vague and stereotyped. Make 'em THINK about what they're saying!
